Is this a new trend? Anderson Valley has a raspberry gose called Framboise Rosé, Tired Hands has made several pink, rosé beers recently, I noticed a Floridian brewery with a juniper rosé beer, and I've seen several other breweries make them recently. Coupled with the new surge in popularity of rosé ciders from Angry Orchard, Original Sin, and others, has this become a new trend?

When I hear the word Rose, I think of wine. The Anderson Valley beer is a Gose. The name sounds like marketing to me, perhaps at an attempt to mimic the image of Rose wine, if not only by name and in color, then perhaps through certain flavor characteristics as well. I am not familiar with the other beers/ciders you listed, so I’m not sure if they fall into the same category. If they do, then it just sounds like the remarketing of an existing product. Outside of the ones you’ve listed above, I’ve not seen the term Rose used in the marketing of beer.

I've seen at least half a dozen beers recently described as Rosé, and I figured it probably wasn't coincidence. Obviously they're not Rosé in the same sense as wine, but they're all beers deliberately made pink due to the usage hibiscus, plum, raspberry, or other ingredients. Angry Orchard Rosé Cider is the same way.

Definitely seeing more, especially since it’s becoming extremely popular in the wine world now. I think it may be traveling in the rosé wine wake, hoping to pick up some adventurous ones in the exponentially booming rosé demographic of the past few years.

That's a highly likely explanation. I noticed Dogfish Head is releasing another wine-inspired beer soon that's composed of 49% grape must.

I feel that only beers made with grapes could be considered rosé-inspired (so only the DFH one of the ones you mentioned, OP). Anything else is just marketing. I guess I could see calling beers that are trying for the flavors of rosé without using grapes would/could fit.

As mentioned, rosé has become a pretty hot category in wine (after a long maligned history), so it is probably trying to trade on that.

Seems gimmicky, but I'd be willing to assess the individual beers on their own merit. But for gods sake, let's not make it another style!!!!!!!

Brewers are in a tough spot with the current crop of beer geeks; if a featured ingredient doesn't hit them over the head the beer gets knocked for not having enough 'xyz'. Using the Rose term is simply a way of signaling that this will feature a more subtle approach.

On one hand, it's a shame that they have to do this. On the other, at least I know what to look for now .

We’re trying to cut into that casual wine drinker market, just like we tapped into that lucrative milkshake-aficionado market. :stuck_out_tongue:

    Juice cleanse beers coming next...

I’ll need to keep my eyes peeled. I am a fan of the Anderson Valley Goses so if I see the Rosé I’ll give it a try.

Just drink an old Belgian beer and be sure to get all that yeast in ya - it'll do the trick.

Forbidden Root in Chicago has a Rosé beer - Sparkling Rose Ale - and it definitely caters to the win drinkers who maybe wouldn't otherwise order a beer. My wife (not a beer drinker) loves it. I've had it and its good, but you can definitely see how its trying to mimic a wine like profile. That being said, biere de champagne/brut is a classic style and these tend to fall in that category.

Sprinkle the Magic Pixie Dust and a Red becomes a Rose. Neat marketing hat trick.

Yeah, but where do you get the Magic Pixie Dust? :stuck_out_tongue: And isn't that a new beer style in itself???

I think we are seeing something pop, I saw my local guy offering a beer/wine hybrid just the other week then saw your post so there is something going on around the country.

If they make them sour I'll be at least willing to give some of them a go. Sweet and sugary? Hard pass.
