How many of you guys have had their stuff. I just picked some up and thought it was pretty decent, especially the Fear of a Brett Planet. I bought a sixer of it in cans and the more I drank them the more I appreciated what they did with that beer. A pale ale with brett? I'm digging it. I might have to get to the tasting room, heck it's only over in Lansdale.
I've been there once before, food wasn't bad. I forget what i had, i think it was the Kiss off IPA and the maple brown ale. Both weren't bad at all on tap. Did get a 6er of the Kiss off to go, and hated it in cans. Not sure if it was old or what but i'm a little hesitant to buy more cans but i'll gladly go back to the tap room. Only about 15 mins from me so its nice to stop in.
I've been to the tap room frequently, so I've tried about 15 of their beers. Some really good, others average. Never a bad beer. My favorite regulars would be Fuzzy Muttness and Original Slacker. My favorite rotating/one off beers have been Last Waltz and Amateur Hour.
What Jack said. I went a few times when they first opened and haven't been back, mostly because I don't make it to the area very often anymore. My recollection is that Fuzzy Muttness was my favorite beer they had back then, and that everyone there was exceedingly nice. Early renditions of the Berliner were heavy on the cheese and gym socks notes and I heard about undrinkable batches but the ones I had were acceptably funky.
I have generally liked their stuff. Their Berliner on-tap with some woodruff syrup is really nice. I have a 6-pack of the Berliner in cans in the fridge right now. Recently, I had their K-I-N Tucky Saison (saison aged in bourbon barrels), and Amateur Hour Imperial Stout on-tap. Both I thought were pretty tasty.
I think Round Guys make a solid line of beers and they get a little creative too...some of the creative stuff is good, some not so much, but that could be up to individual tastes. It's certainly a place worth checking out if you're a local. Bring your growlers. Food will be your typical burgers/sandwiches, but they spice up the menu here and there. FWIW, I believe their distributed cans are from a mobile canning service, which sometimes have trouble with the QA, in particular residual oxygen in the can. If you see their stuff on a store shelf I would take more care to be sure you're buying fresh product. Or better yet, get it at the source.
@Ranbot ,thanks for the tip of: “I believe their distributed cans are from a mobile canning service…” Hopefully some other BA can confirm that. In the interim I will personally avoid purchasing Round Guys canned products. There was an article a while back in Philly BeerScene magazine and they had discussion (and photograph) of the canning process by We Can – Mobile Canning (they are from Danville, PA). The use a ‘low tech’ manual canning system and there is no doubt in my mind that ‘excess’ dissolved oxygen is a concern with this packaging system. Cheers!
Saw the Berliner in cans yesterday, gotta pick that up next time. I grabbed another sixer of Brett. Good beer.
I've only seen the bottles of the Berliner I've had it on tap and well it drinks like the reviews. I was most interested in the Brett.
Yes, definitely liked Fear of a Brett Planet. It is a unique packaged product in the Philly market for a local brewery, go figure, and I think they nailed it. Also, Amateur Hour is a great impy stout and would love to see that hit a barrel.
Round Guys had some consistency issues in their early days but those days are now behind them. There are doing excellent and exciting stuff these days. Kiss Off is a great IPA. The Berliner and Brett Planet cans are amazing, tasty and something nobody else is doing. Round Guys is the real deal.
I'm getting a six pack of the Berliner for next weekend at the beach, then I'll try the Kiss Off. Good opinion, thanks!
I'm really glad I gave their Berliner another shot recently after having had it in a large 750ml format about a year ago... Complete 180 in terms of the overwhelming funk that permeated that first big bottle. I grabbed a can of Fear of a Brett Planet but wasn't particularly impressed by that one... Nice brett character, but where are the hops? I couldn't find a canned-on date either so perhaps it was an old can? They've definitely piqued my interest with how well they're making that Berliner now tho... I'll be keeping an eye out for the new releases.
"I couldn't find a canned-on date either..." I wonder if the canning system that We Can Mobile Canning owns has the ability to date cans? Cheers!
Since it's "low tech" (quoting another poster, I personally don't know anything about this canning system), they might not even have the capability to date the cans. Either way, they need to find a way to do that. Every craft brewery should date their product. We pay good money for this stuff, I don't think born-on dates across the board is asking too much.
