Russian River's 10 year anniversary party is going to be this weekend. Does anybody know about what happened in previous years? Anything special happening for this year's celebration? Just trying to gauge the level of shitshow on a scale of 1-10.

I seriously hope people aren't planning on forming a line. The party doesn't start until 8PM.

Don't you mean one of you will be there at 1pm and the rest will show up and join the line at 7:50pm?

Any actual helpful information? This is all I found on their website:

"Come help us celebrate our first 10 years in business at our brewpub in Downtown Santa Rosa! So far we have entertainment in the evening and we will dig out something aged from the funky cellar to share. Thank you for helping make our first 10 years so awesome!"

RR is a shitshow for every release/event and grows progressively larger each time. I am sure anybody with any information is being tight lipped about it.

Either way, sounds like a good time. I would imagine some 3L's are bound to get popped...

Can someone explain to me why Supplication/Temptation/Consecration is more sought after out of a 3L than it is on tap or out of a regular bottle? It's one thing if Beat or something else unique gets opened, but I've just never understood the draw of the 3L bottle pour for the standard stuff.

I've been to beer festivals (FWIBF) and watched people wait in long lines for a 3L bottle pour of a regular RR sour when 30 feet away was Brandy Barrel Huna with little or no line.

Heard they're pulling something from the funky cellar to share.

I bet they open a 6L or 9L for the party. Stinks I won't make it there but a I bet something like that is likely to happen.

Wine people think larger format bottles can age better. Perhaps this is the same.

Well... I can buy one easily from any liquor store, and the other is only available in limited supplies from the source. Which do you think is going to taste better?

Though in all seriousness, a beer should age better in the large bottle due to the lower surface area to volume ratio (which would help to reduce the rate of oxidization). Of course, the thing that oxidization hurts the most is hops, and I'm not sure how much that would really help a sour.

But, I have to say there is definitely a cool communal element to sharing a 3L bottle of beer with a bunch of people you've never met, as well as the fact that you're tasting a very specific pinprick in history that has been kept by the brewery. That second part can certainly also be achieved with a cellared keg, but it's definitely enhanced by the first part, I think.

I didn't realize beer and wine age better in a large format. Thanks for the info. That's the best reason I've heard for why they are such a draw for collectors.

I guess I'm not social enough to get as excited about a communal 3L bottle. But it should be a great party!

It's more about the rarity with the 3Ls from RR. They don't necessarily age poorly, but they also don't gain much, though older Temptation is pretty sick. In general, aging beers with fruit added like Supplication and Consecration means letting the fruit flavor fade. Also, doesn't RR recommend aging them for 3 years or less? I know that was the case with the label of Consecration, but they changed the way the labels are and I don't have one handy.

Edit: 3Ls of Chimay Blue makes more sense to me from an aging standpoint. I'd obviously rather have a sour from RR, but still...

During RR 'tion night at Toronado this year, the 2011 Temptation was one of the best beers. That's definitely a great beer to age for a few years.
