Rugby World Cup LIF

    After participating in a couple BIF’s this spring/summer, and signing up for a few NFL-centric BIF’s for the fall/winter, I figured I should throw together a LIF for the masses. As my BA name and avatar indicate, I’m a big rugby guy. Been playing and/or coaching every spring and fall for the last 13 years, with the exception of the 4 weeks I spent in New Zealand watching the last Rugby World Cup in 2011. This tournament is more exciting than the soccer world cup, has more hitting than the NFL playoffs, and boasts the best athletes in the world that you’ve never heard of. But now I’m going to give you an excuse to turn on Universal Sports at 7am on Sunday September 20th to watch USA take on Samoa. What a better way to lead into your Football Sunday festivities than watching NFL-sized men smash into each other with no pads or helmets. Pool Play is September 18th – October 11th and knockout rounds run October 17th – October 31st.

    What’s the prize? Well that’s TBD but will almost certainly include a variety of Massachusetts hops from highly sought after breweries. Other than that, you’ll just have to wait and see!

    Quick note about eligibility: In order to ensure we have a respectful BA member winning this, you must meet at least one of these criteria if you wish to enter. Sorry if this prevents anyone from participating, hope you understand.
    • Have successfully ran your own LIF here on BA
    • Have successfully ran or participated in at least 1 BIF here on BA
    • Minimum 3 unique successful trades w/ 100% positive feedback.
    Ok, so here’s the deal…. I’ve got a list of questions below. If you’re interested in participating, please copy/paste the list, along with your answers into this thread. This is for transparency, and so I don’t have to dig through my inbox for entries. Deadline for submissions is Monday, September 14th. No exceptions. You can edit your post up until that date - be sure to check up on injuries as teams are still playing warm-up matches.

    Each question will be worth 1 point. In the case of a tie regarding a question (multiple teams / players meet question criteria) both will be awarded 1 point. If at the end of the tournament multiple BA members have the same point total I will revert to the two tiebreaker questions listed below.

    Questions:
    1. Which team will win each pool (Pick 1 team from each Pool – Each correct answer equals 1 point)?
    2. Which USA player will score the most tries during Pool Play?
    3. How many games will USA win during Pool Play?
    4. What will be the point differential of the biggest blowout in Pool Play (Closest guess gets 1 point)?
    5. Which team will score the fewest points during Pool Play?
    6. Which team will score the most points during Pool Play?
    7. How many games will end in a tie during Pool Play?
    8. Which European club will advance the furthest?
    9. In what round will England be eliminated (Pool, QF, SF, Cup, or “they’ll win it all”)?
    10. Will any Knockout game require extra time (due to tie) to complete?
    11. Will a "drop goal" be successfully completed during a game in the Knockout Round?
    12. Will any player score a hat-trick (3 tries) in a game?
    13. Will New Zealand reach the finals?
    14. Who will win the 2015 Rugby World Cup?

    Tiebreakers (Closest to actual wins):
    Tiebreaker #1 - How many combined points will be scored in the RWC Final?
    Tiebreaker #2 - How many points will team USA score in Pool Play?

    FYI for Question #4... last world cup the biggest blowout was 76 points (NZ 83 - 7 Japan) and there were multiple games that were 60+ point blow outs. Feel free to update your numbers accordingly.

    Got to be Carlin Isles, former sprinter. He plays Rugby 7's (7-on-7, 7-minute halves - full 100-meter field so there's tons of space and less contact) which will be in the Olympics next year. The Rugby World Cup is 15's (15-on-15, 40-minute halves, no timeouts) which is more structured and hard hitting. Both versions of the sport are fun to watch!
