Stone's revised and modern interpretation of a double IPA using new hops and techniques not available previously that would have allowed them to create this beer in the first place. IM IN!

Ruination was one of it not the first double IPA to really get me into hoppy beers so I bought a whole sixer of this in faith. Also I was anticipating this release since the news broke out about it, I mean I trust Stone when it comes to hops. So what about the beer? One answer: REGRET! Yea strong word but I regret buying this sixer. Here is the reason why, a list if you will.

    1. Appearance: While runination(original) was a nice bright hoppy orange color this is more pale in color like hey or straw-yellow.
    2. Aroma: Underwhelmed, Where is it? Sure i get some hops but most of the sweetness I pick up is from the alcohol not hops!
3.Taste: Definitely delivers on the bitterness alot right from the front! And you certainly taste the sweetness from the 8.5%, like alot. I would say besides the intense bitterness, alcohol is the dominate flavor. But as for pure "Hop Flavor", virtually none! And the malt, i knew right away based on the color of the beer that it would not play a big role in the flavor.
    4. After-taste: Super-Super dry. Having one now with a bottle of water. Rough and hard to finish.

And to think they ended Ruination(original) altogether for this! I mean even Sierra Nevada was smart enough to leave Torpedo alone when Hop Hunter came along instead of taking it away.

Anyone else get to try this yet, does it replace an original classic?

Dont think Im a hop head? My fridge currently has Carton 077xx double ipa, torpedo, stone IPA, headwaters pale ale, Laguintas IPA. Yes Im a huge hop head.

They ended Ruination (original) in 2013 and no one batted an eye. They revise it again, re-brand it and everyone loses their shit.

I'm reserving judgment for about 30 more minutes until I open my first one.

Yeah I will certainly be trying it. Stone rarely lets me down. Glad to see it seems to have made it's way to NJ already.

Let me know what you think when you try it. Just dont confuse the sweetness of the alcohol for tropical hop flavors or aroma on this one. It happens often with Double IPAs in general.

one of the kramers is here. are you the guy who compared with another kramer who had the same avatar - and it was obvious the BEERs were in different states of drunkness?

    that was great.

OP -- cant wait to try it! sounds pretty good.

So Ruination 2.0 = New Coke? Brilliant Stone, just brilliant. I already can't wait for you to release "Ruination Classic."

Drinking one right now and I'm really enjoying it. Has the intense piney resinous bitterness from Ruination 1.0 in the back end but it has a hint of floral fruitiness up front. I don't know if it's just this bottle but it doesn't have much carbonation. A bit of fizz would really brighten it up. Hope the other 5 bottles are even better.

More like the first revision was ruination 1.1. They kept the same hop and malt profile but changed it around a bit to keep it balanced with the up in alcohol by a few points. This new profile definitely looks like a 2.0. The addition of azacca has me worried, that was in the extra hoppy old guardian and gave it a very candy orange flavor. I'm hoping its not as strong in the new ruination. And hopefully that $19.99 is a mistake by a lone store in Michigan. At that price, I probably wouldn't even by a sixer and I'm a Stone fan boy.

by the way. this review on youtube says the complete opposite...
Heavy hop aroma, more complex malt bill trying to balance with the hops and a ton of hop flavor, and the color definitely looks reminiscent of ruination.

Bought a sixer for $13.99 in NJ and had one last night. Mine was crystal clear. Reserving judgment until I have a few more. Might try to track down some relatively fresh original for a comparison.

I tried it last night and was pleased with it. Honestly, when the Ruination 10th Anniversary was first released (not RuinTen) I thought they could do away with Ruination and continue making that. I feel 2.0 is a nice balance between the two and it is strikingly good. Really dig it. All German ingredients, clean and crisp.

If it takes you more than one bottle of beer to come up with an assessment then I dont think thats a good sign. For example my first sip of Carton 077xx was like "Wow this stuff is awesome". But maybe some beers have to grow on you.

I thought it was a really nice double IPA. A little more dank than I wanted. I know the big trend in DIPAs is about more hop flavor and dank, Danker, DANKEST, but I really miss the trademark Ruination dry bitterness. While this still has the hopped up IBUs, the higher alcohol leaves this a touch sweeter than I would have preferred. I'm contradicting myself from some of the things I said about this beer prior to its release - including the fact that I earlier defended their keeping the name Ruination. Comparison are obviously invited, and for me I would have preferred to judge this beer without any preconceived ideas.

I hadn't been buying Ruination very often, so it's not like Stone took my favorite beer away. But when it comes to San Diego IPAs, I just miss all the pine trees and could do without all the rain forest.

Makes me appreciate Alesmith IPA and Port Wipeout even more.

Got alot of tropical fruit in the nose and taste. Thanks for pointing out it is not the hops, will keep that in mind for my next homebrew IPA.

P.s. - I prefer this over the original, which was very one dimensional in my opinion.

Sounds a lot like "Ruin Ten" which they ended up putting in 6 packs. In that case I'll pass. Enjoy by looks to be the way to go.
