I'm sitting here at Starbucks in Santa Rosa and we just scored! A young man named Alex told us that he was Asst. Brewmaster and that he could get us a growler pour of PTY. He wanted only $150....since there's five of us, it seems like a good deal...we forked over the cash and we're awaiting Hop Ecstasy! It's been about 90 minutes, so he should be here any moment. I'll keep you posted!

Seems like a risky thing for him to do ...but I guess life is all about timing. Hopefully he doesn't take your money and run.

Just kidding on that one...thanks for playing along. I live in San Francisco, and just made a trip to City Beer (similar to Biercraft in Brooklyn). Everyone is pretty stoked about strong beer week here, and good vibe in the air.

I may try to make it up to Santa Rosa if I think the lines may be reasonable on a weekday.

I figured you were kidding, but...

I was wearing my younger shirt at OBF last year, and was chatted up by someone who noticed my shirt. He indicated that he was a bar owner in California, and told me his bar got a keg of younger last year. He told me he didn't sell a drop of it in his bar, and instead sold all of it on Ebay in growler format. According to him, he charged $500 a pop and sold every drop without problem. I asked him if he wasn't concerned that Vinnie would find out about it, and he just shrugged and said he could care less (as there was no way Vinnie could take back the keg he received and he'd already made a fortune on it).

Who knows if there's any truth to the story I was told, but I have to confess, if I was a bar owner, it would be very tempting to pull something like that.

It's practically impossible to sell beer on Ebay for well over a year now, even in a growler, Ebay polices that pretty well. Also, $500 a growler selling "no problem"?

The $500 per growler part of the story was actually the easiest part of the story for me to believe. If you figure the cost of buying an air ticket, getting a hotel for a couple of nights, maybe getting a rental car, taking time off from work, and then whatever you think your time is worth (while waiting in line), $500 no longer seems like such a high price (to the right person).

While you have a point, people like this need to rethink their priorities...and unfortunately there are many of these people.

Was there a similar list for the East Bay? I have a friend in Concord who would love to know. I know the Bistro, but not who else.

Ok, checking further, this was from an SFGate blog, so who knows...

Back again. Getting my face melted again. Sanctification 2010 ran out last night and 2013 is online now but Vinnie isn't letting large pours out due to it foaming up too much. Not going to cry though, beatification and younger blow my mind.

But for the $500 you spend on flight, hotel, time, etc you can buy far more than a single growler. Seems very unlikely but that's just my opinion.

Yeah when people are spending $1000+ to be in a hoarder society for beer, I don't know what to believe anymore

What's the line been looking like these past couple days?
Thinking about heading up tomorrow but if the lines are still killer I'll just swing by mid week next week.

It seems insane to me, but then I feel the same way about folks who are willing to stand in line overnight to get a couple bottles of Kate the Great and some of the limited Voodoo stuff at their release last year. Last fall there was a Matt and Otto release at HOTD where some folks waited in line for 8 hours to get a case of each. I thought that was insane as well.

Seen in that light, I think paying $500 for a growler of younger is completely believeable. I wouldn't do it, and it doesn't sound like you would either, but.... that doesn't mean there isn't someone willing to pay that sort of price.

That being said, who knows if what I was told was the truth. All I'm saying is that it doesn't seem completely incredible to me, and I could certainly understand the temptation to pull something like that if I was a bar owner.
