Have a friend at work that was heading back home to visit her Mom whom lives 3 miles from the Russian River Brewery and I gave her $40 to pick up some beers for me. I would have been happy with 4 beers- was happy to get 8. $4.49 each at Wold Market near brewery- just got in a fresh batch.

Ireceived today my 4 Pliny the Elder, 2 Redemption, and 2 Damnation beers. The total was $40 to the penny.

Question- Pliny is dated 3/19/12 - how long do I have before a degredation in taste?

The other 2 styles are corked and made for storage. I want to try 1 of each corked beers this week.
What do I have to gain in taste by storing the other 2 corked beers? and for how long?

    Thanks in advance

3/19? May as well drainpour it!

I try to drink as fresh as possible, but I had a 2/13 the other day and it was still... okay. Don't let them sit around for a month, but I'd drink it ASAP.

Never aged Damnation or Redemption -- neither uses Brett or souring bugs, I don't know if there's anything to gain from aging them.

Put the hoppy stuff in a fridge or a cool, dry place and hope for the best- just don't save it for aging purposes and itll be fine- just make sure you have one fresh or you'll regret it!

You know you've started following the BA forums when your first post expresses a worry about less-than-2-week-old IPAs fading and about cellaring some beers that don't obviously need it...

I'd have them all drunk before the end of the month.

On their web site it says right now they are bottling Redemption, Supplication, Pliny, Blind pig, Damnation, and Consecration I think she said they had Consecration, but I had read on line it was $12.99 so I decided to maximize my pleasure.
    I will drink them down.

The friend (actually co-worker) did not know she grew up so close to the brewery- and mentioned there was a block and a half line in front of the Brewery when she drove by (must have been pouring some Pliny the Younger).
She goes every year (we live in Idaho and have no distribution from Russian River), and I am already planning to save some extra bucks this time.

If she went on Friday that was Beatification.

I'm drinking a 3/19 dated Pliny right now and it's fine. I say anything over 20 days has fallen off and under 10 day is preferable.

I swear to god it drives me crazy when people think 30-45 day old DIPAs and IPAs have lost anything at all. In fact, I think the perfect time for a Pliny is ~45 days. I live in Socal and have drank them for years and have had 500-1000 over the years from fresh off the line to 120 days and it's not until 75 days that you can even remotely notice anything. even after 2 months it still beats the hell out of 99% of the world's DIPAs.

it seems to me that it's the newest entries to craft beer that perpetuate this myth. Most breweries don't even have a born on date, Sculpin for example, one of my favorites, still doesn't carry one. I'm sure half the rants and raves on here about their local discovery is some 3 month old shelf duster...

yes, and the tendency to put any and every RIS, barleywine or sour in the cellar for aging. 90% of those beers will come out the same or worse after a year or 2, yet everybody needs to have a vintage barleywine (or RR wild ale, it seems) in the basement...

Uhh, well maybe that's true for you, but that 2/13 Pliny I had the other day was pretty clearly off. It wasn't terrible by any means, but it wasn't Pliny.

I will take everyone's 30 day old Pliny without even blinking an eye!

If you don't like sour beers then you made the right choice. Otherwise, bad move. Their hoppy and sour stuff are the best and damnation and redemption are neither but they're still good beers.

Ok, this is getting ridiculous. Can you really tell a difference after 20 days?

I've had a ton of Pliny most right at two weeks old, but I've had a few that were a month old too. I don't believe blind folded anyone could tell the difference. Once you get out a few months I might agree, but I've never had a 60 day old Pliny either.

My first pliny and blind pigs were each about 4 and then 3 months old are were still excellent. I received two week old ones shortly after and while better they weren't insanely better.

I'm beginning to believe beer that can't last longer than 3 months is poorly developed for distribution. I agree there are beers that have a profound difference in flavor between two weeks and two months (Pliny, Sculpin, Hopslam), and others that can manage a little time in the cooler (Ruination, Torpedo, Flower Power, Jai Alai).

I'm more impressed these days by beers that can hang out and not require immediate attention like a hormone pressed teen.
