This weekend I noticed some rust on the caps of my two bottles of 2007 Bigfoot. These are my oldest bottles and also the only bottles showing signs of rusting. My basement gets fairly humid in the summer, so I'm assuming this is the cause.

Is a little rust formation normal? Or is this concern that the seal is breaking down and my cellar is too damp?

I'm planning to try one in the next few weeks, so I guess I'll find out then whether or not the beer's been compromised, but I'm curious what others have experienced.

    Thanks!

Should be okay. Just wipe away the rust before popping and pouring (but be careful). Some lemon juice might do the trick.

I've read that foil should be removed from bottles that have them when cellaring (to prevent rust). Any truth to this? Does it matter on the type of foil? I have some Avery in my cellar that has foil, Speedway Stout has some sort of foil on it...worth taking that off?

    Ho
Yep. You need to take off that foil. Not exactly what the Hanson brothers would say though.

Yeah. What Zimbo said. When two different metals stay in constant contact with each other they tend to corode. Espically in a humid environment.

Only bottles I've ever had rust were ones that had foil on them previously. Had a Mother Of All Storms last night and it had a rusted cap, still proper seal though. I wouldn't leave em long though once you find the rust.

I have read that the reason for that is because the foil is put on when the bottles are still wet from being rinsed off the filling line. Without a chance to dry, the rust forms on the cap underneath.
