I just opened a bottle of Coastal Extreme brewing Angel's Envy Rum BA and there is orange rush all along the lip of the bottle and inside the cap. Has anyone seen this before? Not sure if I should dump it or try it. Thoughts?
Try it. If we see no further posts from you we'll know to avoid orange rush. Your experiment will be helping the BA community.
Haha...meant "rust" but like Orange Rush better. I gave it a taste and don't seem any worse for the wear. At least I won't be anemic.
I've seen the same thing on a bottle of Great Lakes Brewing Company's Dortmunder Gold. It tasted weird.
It was a bomber so don't think it was sitting in water and it didn't have foil over cap. Not sure what would cause it. Drank it and it was decent but never had it prior so nothing to compare it to. Outcome: Me (1), Rust (0)
Before we opened a brewery, we used to do a bunch of craft beer poker nights. Because no one ever seemed to remember to take the unopened beer out of the cooler at the end of the night, I've had a good amount of experience with said rusty cap issue. Since I hate throwing out beer or having anyone else throw beer out, I'll always give it a taste before dumping it. Most of the time it is fine but it seems to help if the beer is darker. If it is lighter, there is more of a chance to detect off flavors. I'd say out of a sample size of 10-12, only two or so were undrinkable and had to be dumped. The rest ranged from reasonably ok to no issues. The obvious keys in this particular case is to not let the beer sit in water for too long, especially warm water, and to drink it as soon as you can after discovering the issue. I think the best option is for everyone to turn in their keys, tough it out and make sure the ice chest is empty by the end of the night!
I sent my brother a small batch barleywine from a brewery in San Antonio. It was wax-dipped, and he found rust under the cap. I doubt this bottle had been sitting around in water prior to being dipped in wax, but who knows. I'm sure there are a few ways this could have happened. He still drank it and lived, so cheers!
Found a 4 pack of 2012 Big Eddy RIS at a grocery store last weekend. Popped open the first one and there was a minute amount of orange rush on the lip. Likewise, never had this before so nothing to compare to, but the beer was great to me, with no off flavors.
