Hey guys. I'm looking to make a trip Richmond/ Charlottesville/ there abouts the last weekend in October. Currently Hardywood, Ardent, Strangeways and Devils Backbone are on my to do list. Was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations of breweries, beer bars or events that weekend. Thanks!
If you're heading to Devil's Backbone, you might as well check out Blue Mountain Brewery. It's about 15 minutes up the hill and part of the same beautiful scenery that DB has to offer.
In all likelihood, you'll drive by Blue Mountain Brewery (along SR 151) on your way to Devils Backbone. If it's not raining, do yourself the favor of stopping and having a beer on the patio. The view alone -- particularly if the leaves are in full color -- is worth it and the beer is super-solid. Plenty of vineyards/wineries in the area, too, if you have some non-beer folks along with you. (In fact, Bold Rock Cider is in Nellysford ... and also likely on your way to/from Devils Backbone.) And in RVA, you can't go wrong with Strangeways and Hardywood Park. Safe travels!
If you're headed to Richmond and you have the time, you should try to squeeze in a meal stop at Mekong. For some bottle shopping in the Charlottesville area, you might want to check out Beer Run.
Definitely Mekong/The Answer in Richmond, they're close by Strangeways and you won't be disappointed.
Thanks for all the recommendations. Has anyone been to Lickinghole Creek or Center of the Universe? Both sound pretty solid.
Lickinghole Creek makes awesome beer but they're pretty far out there, really not in Richmond at all.
I was just doing some small research on Louisa, Goochland, and surrounding counties to figure out where Lickinghole Creek is located. This sounds like a promising project and the territory is truly beautiful. I attended the University of Richmond 69-72, and had friends from all across The Old Dominion. I had moved on to Guilford College. In 1972 I was visiting my good friends at their new and near derelict rental property called Jerdone Castle, on the banks of the new Lake Anna. Bumpass, Va. was on the way. It was New Years and very unseasonably warm and this place was getting ready to change forever. I think it's a golf course now, but THEN it was forgotten, full of colonial artifacts, and a memory I can never shake. I just read where George Washington stayed there in 1791. It was a very spooky place for sure. We took cheap-ass Ballantine Beer, Ringnes from Norway, National Premium, and Red Cap Ale.
If he's going to Charlottesville, it's on the way kind of. Sure, it's off 64 but it's not too far out of the way.
