I noticed that Fermentis has changed the type of yeast that S-33 SafBrew and it is now a lager.

I have never used this yeast in beer before, because I heard it was the EDME kit ale yeast, and I never had good luck with that yeast back in the day.

But now that it says lager on the package does anyone know if it is truly a lager? That would explain the "Belgian" flavors that the marketing talks about. If it is a lager it is not EDME.

Has anyone ever tried to lager a beer with this yeast?

** I found this thread, but it basically talks about how they hate the yeast, and not anything about cold fermentation.

Are you confusing S-23 with S-33? Other than that, I find your question hard to decipher.

    Not confusing any yeast.

S-23 SafLager is a different yeast. (nor the W-34/70)

To summarize my ramble it looks like Fermentis has repackaged the yeast and are now calling it a lager. The packaging we have here at work now calls it a "Dry Lager Yeast" on the SafBrew S-33 label.

I want to know if anyone has used this yeast to lager with.

Whatever they care to call it, ale, lager, Belgian, English, Specialty (?), etc., I have never read a kind word about it in my 8+ years of haunting internet forums. I've been too discouraged to develop my own opinion on the matter.

I heard rumors that it was the Munton's dry yeast that comes with their kits... that was all I needed to hear.

I find it hard to believe its Munton's. I had always heard it was the EDME kit yeast. Having made those kits in the early 90's.

Munton's ferments down in to the upper 50's, the S-33 drops out in the lower 60's.

    I probably confused the two.
