So I've recently acquired 5 bottles of 94' Sam Adams Triple Bock. After reading many reviews and "Worst Beer Ever" Lists, I haven't been turned away. I'm looking forward to being able to appreciate this fascinating bottle of beer.

My question is this... How long once it's opened will it keep for. It's often compared to a fine sherry, port, or cognac, but does it last like a sherry or port once the bottle has been opened? I plan on sharing the bottle amongst a few of my friends so I'm sure the bottle will be gone, but still a bit curious.

I don't know for sure, but at 21% ABV and bottled flat, I'd say a few days, easy. If you use one of those wine vacuum corks, probably a few weeks. After that it'll really start to oxidize.

However, if you open it up and it tastes like pure soy sauce, it likely means its already been oxidized to shit, so at that point you could recap it, put it back in the fridge and store it pretty indefinitely without the flavor degrading any more than it has.

luckily you have the '94 bottles. the '97 are supposed to be the soy sauce ones. im sitting on one of each and am also curious to the differences. cheers!

Well, if it isn't shit from the get go, it will last a long time depending on how much is left in the bottle. Opening introduces a lot of oxygen which jump starts oxydation exponentially due to the fresh O2. With that said... I have been nipping at a mikkeller black for a year. I have noticed a difference... But... Meh. Not huge. I actually like a bit of it in a high Abv beer like that.

Believe the vintage I opened two years ago was a 95'...tons of soy sauce and the cork fell apart as I opened the bottle. Hope you have a better experience.

Are you sure you aren't confusing Triple Bock and Utopias?

They are both pretty damn strong and at this point have zero carbonation. Port/Sherry are in that same 17-22% ABV range roughly. Both Sherry and Port have a little bit of staying power once they are opened. Granted you aren't getting a small 8.5 oz bottle, you are normally getting a 750ml bottle of sherry and port. There's no way you'll be drinking all that in one sitting.

The Triple Bock should be pretty similar (the utopias I already know can last once opened, no problem). It has the alcohol content to hold up to a little oxygen. I'm sure if you hit it with a little bit of inert gas it would extend it's life even longer. I know the 4 of the 5 have been stored properly, so I'm not too concerned about it already being oxidized, but you never know.
