Only one way to know for sure. Please document the attempt for everyone.

My freshman year of college, I didn’t want to waste money on a bottle opener when I had perfectly good knives... I sabered every bottle I drank that year.

How do you open it to get the other 1.06 liters out of the magnum first?

Will it work with a Katana? A machete? I only have so much to work with at my house.

Awaiting Monday's "How bad have you hurt yourself opening a bottle?" threads.

Yeah. I may have tried this before for that very reason. Pretty sure it didn't end well.

Yes I have done it. It works well, a proper blade is really needed.

You will of course want to open up something like a good carbonated Belgian style.

And of course Bier Brut is fantastic for it!

Did you chill the neck first?

The demos I've seen involve having the neck of the bottle well chilled in ice before the sabering. The suggestion was that it makes the fracture point(s) cleaner/easier.

It might help, but I never did that when I did mine.

The big important thing is you want to follow the seam of the bottle where it meets the neck. That is where you want to strike it because that's the weak point is and will make a clean cut.

The seam should be facing up towards you, and that's your ideal contact point.

What kind of blade? I'm pretty sure I was using a 12 inch Cold Steel tanto and blew the bottle apart. I was fairly drunk at the time, though, so it may have been more me than the blade.

You can buy champagne sabers, I think I used a slightly older 8 or 10 inch chefs knife instead.

    I'm probably wrong here, but.......

I thought the idea was to knock the cork out, whilst not damaging the bottle. A quick, clean, smooth motion, that just glides over the neck, and bumps the cork out.

Of all the times I've seen it done, the goal is to keep the bottle intact, and send the cork.

I'll be certain to correct the folks who are clearly doing it wrong.

Demos I’ve seen of Sabering involve breaking glass off as well. Fracture at weak spot on neck of bottle.
