Depends on what your looking for but total wine has a nice selection of regular and seasonal craft beers and had the cheapest price on everything. Whole foods on Arden does a good job getting lots of great craft beers. Pangaea two brews has a decent selection of stuff you won't see in stores lots of Belgian stuff. Corti brothers has a nice selection as well. Nugget markets always has a nice selection for a grocery store.

Don't go to Pangea, they are the worst most overpriced store in the area.

2 options, slightly out of town, but worth going to:

Final Gravity in Roseville - Great selection, and great prices

Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis - Same deal.

Have your homeboy go there. Both have excellent taps too.

Agree that Pangaea is a bit expensive. Usually a couple dollars more per bottle than other places but its still worth it for a lot of stuff. I think it's worth it to spend a bit more sometimes to establish a good relationship. They will pull limited releases aside for me at times since we have a good relationship. Also very few places have allowed me to drink Pliny the elder daily, westy 12 and Pliny the younger before as well along with tons of amazing other drafts. I think its worth it but maybe I have more money than sense Lol.

Nailed it. Pangea is horrible. Prices are about 35% higher than other places. Yes, you can get Pliny on tap, I think it is $6 for an 8 oz pour, that is more than anywhere else charges for a pint. I think Track 7 bottles were $7.99 at Pangea and $5.49 at Nugget (expensive grocery store).

Go to Capitol Beer! Howe and Fair Oaks. Big, nice selection and friendly knowledgeable folks working there with 20 taps that are constantly changing.

Edit: Looks like the owner already replied to you! Haha

Stopped at Capitol Beer today, very nice. 20 taps and a wide range of bottles to choose from. I see myself visiting often.

The bevmo and Total Wine in Arden are pretty solid. As stated Davis Beer Shop is worth a visit and Final Gravity in Roseville is pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to some pulled pork nachos at Final Gravity when I'm back in CA.

Truth. Part of the problem is the city has an outdated ordinance that prohibits sales of single bottles of beer in the central "grid," so that more or less prohibits having a craft-beer oriented store in midtown.

Pangea are outside the "no single sales" zone, and they could be great, but instead they choose to be shameless gougers and anybody who deals with them is either a fool, a tourist, a toadie, or all three. There, I said it, and I feel better. Taylor's is not bad, but its selection is not competitive with a place like Davis Beer Shoppe.

The best place to buy beer in Sacramento is still 15 miles down the road in Davis. And well worth the drive.

PtE used to be $7.50 for that 8 oz pour. And it was $9.50 a bottle when they had bottles. That's roughly double what you pay anywhere else, so I'm not surprised if they had to lower it a bit. And let's not forget the scam they pulled when they got a keg of the Younger: you could only get a taste by buying tickets to a special performance by some no-name local R&B guy, which I believe were $75 when first offered, though they were lowered some, probably due to slow sales. Seriously, is this the kind of place you want to support, when there are so many other stores and bars who treat customers so much more fairly?

I went the other day and the prices now go all the way down to only 4.50 (and up to 9.50) but just about EVERY beer is a 25cl (8 oz) pour which is ridiculous.

How were the bottle prices looking? I remember a long while ago they had Alpine stuff for $15-20 a bottle.

The bottle prices these days seem much more in line with other shops.

I haven't looked at their bottles in a long time. But I had a Stone Enjoy By there a couple months ago and I think it was $7.50 for about 8 ounces. Davis Beer Shoppe right now has Enjoy By for $5.50 per 16 oz pour. I mean, come on.
