I have 3 packets of SB-33 dated 11/2012 that have been in my frig since I bought them. What are the odds they are still usable and if so, should I pitch 2 in my porter to increase the odds of a successful fermentation cycle? -11*f this AM
I suggest you go by another pack instead. I know dry yeast last a long time, even after best by dates, but cell counts get to iffy in older yeasts and you'd be guessing what percent of the yeasts will wake up and go to work. Spending another $2-3 is a quick and easy solution to guarantee the best beer you can get out of this batch.
I guess you're right Dr, it's not worth it when a couple bucks removes the gamble. I've had vg luck with died yeast packettes bluehende. I guess I'm a lazy brewer, I tend to make the task at hand as easy as possible. I have thought about propagating my yeasts in the past, I just never got around to it.. Thanks guys..
Minus 37 at Canaan, VT this morning. Thankfully I don't live there and only had to contend with 27 below. It's cold when the donkeys won't come out of the barn for their hay. I have successfully made starters from 4+ year old smack packs, with good final results. Dry yeast should do at least as good. But if you're not a yeast geek you may prefer to buy fresh and skip the time investment.
