Jack D'or is a hoppy saison. I think it just takes the proper hop approach! I do agree that saisons are more about balance.

Had a Jack D'or myself recently. It's a curious taste, and I'm willing to discover more about the style. Can't find many saisons in the area, though.

Totally, which is why Miller Lite is triple hops brewed.

Point taken. Jack is hoppier than most, but the hops still do not completely overshadow the malt and yeast characters in there. And that's the point you're and I was making. There's the balance a Brewer needs to hit, and while there is that margin of... corrrectness, you still need to make sure one element does not overshadow the rest.

hahahaha ... we (men) really are stupid. what the hell is it with the hops? so addictive ...

but to the point: Karbach here in Texas put out a saison (Barn Burner -- cool can) that may or may not be a good example of the style, but whatever -- it was kind of sour, very very light, maybe 0.1 on the IBU meter and in many ways NOTHING that I look for in a beer. yet i kind of liked it. liked it enough, in fact, to hunt down another saison or two down the road, just to see what there is to see.

    society is pressuring me!

Yea going to have to go against you on this one. Not polar opposite, I just don't see the connections you're trying to make. I mean if you get down to the nitty gritty, Saisons being brewed for "le saisonniers" or farmhands is pretty tough. It's definitely a hard days work being in the fields under the sun and plenty of heat, sun up to sun down. A working beer for a hard worker- same message MBC uses all the time. People liking hop bombs is just a different sect of beer drinkers, I wouldn't say any more manly than the other (ok, except for the fruit syrup tinged American Wheat beers or "Shandys").

I also think the boys at Oxbow and Prairie would agree.

I brewed a Saison in April that is tasting mighty fine right now!! Added in dried orange peels and coriander at the end of the boil and left in for a week in primary, wasn't difficult at all. Cheers

I just have to comment on this. Barn Burner really isn't a good example of a saison. It's pretty typical of a mediocre American version of one, however. Too sweet and too yeasty imo. I suggest you try some Tank 7, Hennepin, and Saison Dupont.

    Tank 7 no good...

    Saisons are for women...

This has become an awfully strange thread.

I brewed a saison in January with the official Dupont strain, and it is fantastic. That strain loves hot temps and I used a heat lamp to ramp the beer to 85F in my chest freezer ferment chamber; and it is an amazing brew and spot on to what I was looking for in a Saision. There are some other strains that like cooler temps around mid to low 70s, but I think with most ale brewers; they have mostly SS conicals that stay around mid-high 60s for clean ale fermentation and they don't want to/can't heat them up to the phenolic temps saison yeast thrives on. Just a thought, could be wrong.

I feel like every new brewery here is making a saison or 10

Stillwater has a bunch of saison/farmhouse available in VA as well.

Saisons are better done by those who know saisons. Instead of asking for Stone (or the like) to make a saison, I'd ask for more world class saisons (there are plenty of them) to be distributed to my area.

I think this is a reach. IF there is any societal pressure based on masculinity, I've seen it with regard to craft beer as a whole. But most people outside of the craft beer community have no idea what a saison is, and I don't really hear beer geeks telling other beer geeks "Why are you drinking that girly beer?"

I keep waiting for Stone or Sierra Nevada or *any* American brewer to make a true IPA ... like the British make ... or a British pale ale. That energy would be better spent buying stock in Samuel Smith (or Fuller's or whichever English brewery you prefer).

I don't know, but I just had the French Saison at De Steeg Brewing in Denver. It might be the best Saison on the planet! :grimacing:

Maybe it depends on the brewery. Some have a different goal I suppose. Sometimes they trend for a while and then stop
