Let me break the deafening silence. There was a uproar and many threads a few months ago about Sam Adams summer ale and Boston lager coming out in cans. Have you tried them and what did you think? I personally like summer ale in cans over bottles by far.

It wouldn't matter in cans vs bottles because everything I drink goes into a glass.

I haven't seen them here in South Texas yet. I look forward to trying them.

I want to try them, but I keep putting it off, and spend my cash on a more hoppy treat. In the fall, I am sure I will crack and buy some canned Octoberfest

I'm not a fan of SA Summer, so I personally couldn't care less if it comes in juice boxes. Actually, I think Corona should come in juice boxes with a small pouch of lime juice that's pierced with a straw as you punch through. This way we can stop pretending that it's beer.

We all know that can technology has evolved to the point that it might actually be preferred for short-lived and seasonal beverages. Cans are also less susceptible to light damage, but more susceptible to sudden changes in temperature (which also means they are easier to cool). I don't think the world is going to end if SA base beers and seasonals come in cans and, ultimately, it's "corks" vs. "screwtops" debate for beer. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

I was kind of shocked to find both bottles and cans of the same Avery beers in a local liquor store (not that I want to do a side-by-side comparison, as the prices are equally prohibitive). But I also know that some local (MA) brewers like cans because they are preferred by boaters. Geometrically, cans are certainly better. They pack more compactly for the same profile, weigh less and are not likely to cause any sort of damage in case of an accident (broken bottle vs. ripped can is a no-brainer). But for content quality? For non-aging beers it will make no difference, as long as they can manage to keep carbonation the same (not a given!).

I don't think there is anything wrong with cans. They protect the beer from light, lighter than bottles and stuff like cork and cage is mostly for effect anyway. You're most likely going to put it in a glass anyway and the freshness date can be seen clearly when stamped on the bottom of the can. Oskar blues, sierra nevada, sixpont & sly fox all taste fine from the can.

As soon as they put Noble Pils, Double Agent IPL etc in cans I'll let you know.

Don't drink a whole lot of Boston Lager and am not a huge fan of the Summer Ale. But if they can the Octoberfest come fall (or many of their other brews), I'll certainly try it.

But I can't imagine it'd effect the taste and/or quality in a negative way.

I've only seen 12 packs of Sam Adams cans so far. I don't buy a 12 pack of anything, so I'll grab some when I see them as singles broken up at my store, or if I see six packs.

I haven't seen in Central IL yet. I'm excited to try to them as I love SN cans, mostly just because they're convenient. If the flavor is the same, then I'm all for it.

I've just picked up 2 -12 pks. of SNPA in cans for a party and I'm looking forward to sharing them with my macro drinking friends and family and comparing with bottled which I also have from around the same bottling date. It would be awesome if someone put out wrap around Bud or Coors can labels so I could screw with them. Anybody know of any?

I still haven't had them, but I might pick up some Boston Lager cans if I see any the next time I'm beer shopping.

I had the Boston Lager out of the can a few weeks ago; I enjoyed it. It still tastes like Boston Lager, and I won't knock that. It did seem to have a little more overall bitterness straight out of the can.

Haven't tried Summer Ale out of the can yet. I've had it on tap a few times already this summer, but that beer has never been a favorite of mine at any rate.

Had the Boston lager in cans yesterday for the first time. I'm not a big Sam Adams fan but it was pleasantly surprising, especially for the beach, boating and heat here in FL.

I would agree. I don't drink Boston Lager that often and didn't have a bottle to taste side-by-side with the can, but it definitely seemed to be much more bitter than it had ever been in a bottle.

I had SA Boston Lager from a can recently. Bought a 12-pack. To me the can didn't add much. It was a bit sturdier and had a bigger lip like they said. Maybe it helped a little. I don't think it would have been much different tasting in a regular can. My only impression is occasionally when fresh I get a nice floral hop aroma for a lager. I did not get that from the can. More of a pure maltiness. Just what I noticed. It was good.
