If I ever see it at these prices, I'm in. But $40 for 1.5 ounces? No way.

Is triple retail really that weird? For normal beer I'm used to seeing a 100 percent markup so 200 percent markup for something so special doesn't seem so bad, not that I'd actually take up that offer

Saw it for $35 a shot in Brooklyn, last year. No thanks!

What your saying makes sense but I'd say it's just a really tough sell at this price per quantity in this case.

Yeah, it is quite a lot. I guess it also depends on the establishment and the area it's in. One thought I had, if they're pouring from a bottle how could they possibly expect to sell 20 or so pours in the short time the beer would be good after opening? With expensive wine you almost always have to buy the whole bottle

It isn't carbonated and it is already oxidized it lasts quite a while with the bottle open months

I don't think this is an issue with Utopias. It's more comparable to spirits than to beer, and should be good for a long, long time if capped properly.

Edit: @KevinBrink posted as I was writing this.

Oh ok. I've never even seen it in person so I just assumed it behaved like beer :stuck_out_tongue:

So what's the breaking point for this? Considering bar cost is going to be ~ $180 / 24 oz so the cost alone of the 2 oz pour is going to be at least $15, I think that $25-30 is fair enough, I'm not sure I would pay it, but considering the cost alone it doesn't seem that farfetched. Looking at the Post390 Menu, all prices seem to be inflated, in comparison to everything else on the menu $42 seems pretty much in line considering that there isn't a draft pour for less than $7.

I was lucky enough to have about an ounce from a friend. If you think you'll never ever ever see it and really MUST try it, then sure, $40 is what it is..but personally having had it I don't even know if I want to try it ever again.

If you are at a beer fest, just get enough to taste, you don't want to lose your sense of taste the rest of the night by being so drunk from one pour...

Such a small pour would only do one of two things for me. Piss me off that I spent 40 dollars on basically a shot or piss me off because I would want it again but can't justify the price. I am better off letting it remain a mystery and when I want to treat myself to an insanely priced beverage I will buy a case of Rochafort or a nice bottle of whiskey.

I wouldn't pay that but I did finally get to try it recently . A friend of mine was hosting a bottle share and 10 of us went in on one . Was $20 for almost 2.5 ozs plus we had to bring a good bottle or two . Liked it but wouldn't pay for it again . We probably shouldn't of opened it first but folks were excited to try it and one friend had to leave soon .

A few of the beers we opened later I liked better but I was really glad to try it . The Backyard Rye I opened was tasting great , probably my favorite .

    No way.

I graduate this May, and I plan on going to a very authentic German restaurant to celebrate. If they have Westvleteren 12, I might pay $30 for it, but that's under a very special circumstance. That's not $20+ per ounce though. I rarely pay $8+ for a draft pint anyway.

I bought a bottle this year. With tax, out the door it cost $212. Before I bought it, I got commitments from friends in my tasting group. It works out to be just under 9 bucks an ounce.

I wouldn't buy it because I'm too cheap but I've got a real big birthday coming up in 8 months so I may start dropping some subtle hints. And as time goes on, if those hints don't appear as if they'll bear fruit, I'll dial down the subltlety. Or in 8 months time, I'll move on to something else I'm too cheap to buy.

Just out of curiosity, is Grunaur the German restaurant you speak of?

My friend got a bottle of the 2015, so we've been drinking that for the last couple weeks. So much wood flavor!
