I would say that canning is better, but there are BA's like @yemenmocha who can apparently tell the difference

Great Divide Titan IPA... preferred can over bottle, ever so slightly, taste-test, blind, side by side. But meh... probably not a huge deal unless they age beyond 2mos. Then, can for the win.

I said "potential" for a reason. There are obviously countless variables to consider in the brewing-bottling/canning process.

So....if I'm reading that right, you think bottle vs. can will alter the abv of a beer? Are you high? If the abv changes bottle vs. can its because they put a different liquid in each container, so of course they would taste different.

Randy, that rule is not 100% true. I purchased some canned beer earlier this week from a small brewery where they own their own canning system (permanently located on the brewery) and their cans are shrink wrapped. I have no idea on the quality of the canning line wrt TPO (Total Packaged Oxygen).

    Cheers!

Yeah, the shrink wrapping is one cost effective way of canning in small numbers.

Chris, the 6-pack I recently purchased was at the the Port Jeff Brewing Co. tasting room. Have you ever had beer from Port Jeff? I did a sampler of 10-11 of their beers while I was there; I enjoyed those beers.

    Cheers!

I did that once too (and I've had a few of their beers elsewhere on occasion). Everything of theirs was quite nice (except their cask offerings have been a miss for me so far). There is very little buzz about them, but their fans (although small in number) pop up on occasion here. To bring the conversation back on track, Port Jeff had much less beer-geek interest around their bottled 22 oz pale ale, and starting getting more attention when they canned their IPA and imperial stout. As an audience, we are so predictable.

I've only noticed a difference in one particular beer. Some for reason the bottled beer taste better than the canned one.

I am all for cans, any U.S. beers currently sold in 4 or 6-packs should switch to cans.
I'm fine with bombers for seasonals, special runs and imports.

My wife loved the sample of Party Boat IPA so I decided to buy her a 6-pack (cans) of that beer.

    Cheers!

I thought Nugget Nectar last winter was better from the can. I found Heavy Seas Loose Cannon better from the bottle than the can. Most beers that I've had that come in both have shown very little difference (Two Hearted, Sunshine Pils) and I prefer the cans since they weigh less and chill faster and are sometimes cheaper (by the case) than the bottles.

Try Nooner Pils side by side, see if you don't agree.

I have 0 problem with breweries that do only bottles. But I'm on the pro can side for recreational purposes, space constraints, and the real opportunity to jump onto great packaging design opportunities. I come from a marketing background, so I am well aware that appearance is huge. Packaging has been an eternal human endeavor, and innovation usually saves money in the long run. Archaeologists among may us may speak more clearly to package evolution through time. I know that my brother in law sells glass and hates cans.

Lighter too, you can bring them to the beach or pool without getting chased out.

I did not know that. Regardless, I'm not going to take any chances with those shrink-wrapped cans.

In the bottle, you get trapped oxygen or oxygen infusion around the cap (it happens). You also get light strike through even brown glass; green glass is worse and clear glass offers no protection at all where cans are light impenetrable.

It is the aged or oxidized light struck flavor of the beer you drink in a bottle that you have learned to appreciate and when you get it as the brewer made it from a can, you are able to notice the difference between fresh and not so fresh.

But, definitely not doing plastic..... Makes the beer taste like a sandwich bag!
