It is a great beer, especially when it's super fresh.

I think BBC needs a serious branding overhaul, and they need to pull some of their better beers out of variety pack status and into year round. They've got some winners hiding in there, yet so many losers up front and center.

But yeah BL is a stone cold classic

They still make the Boston Ale? I can't remember the last time I saw some, and I live in Boston.

I'm not a huge fan of BL because the hops only add bitterness rather than any discernible flavor. I definitely prefer other ambers like GL Elliot Ness.

it's a very nice beer on-tap but I wouldn't buy it in bottles. For some reason the bottled version just doesn't have the uummmph the on-tap version has.

It's usually the only decent beer on your average restaurant's menu. That's the highest praise I can give it.

Haven't had one in a while, thanks for reminding me that it's one worth visiting for a glass or three every now, and again.

In Rochester, I can only find it at Beers of the World. It is a very tasty Pale Ale on par with Honker's Ale.

I picked up a single last night. I's not ubiquitous, but it's around.

BL was one of the beers that helped to open the door to craft beers for me and I too thought it was pretty hoppy the first few times I had it (but nowadays I don't even notice the hops in it really). It's a solid beer for sure and like others have said, a good choice at restaurants, weddings, etc., if nothing else more "obscure" is available.

    I completely agree.

As far as I know it's a year-round beer, but not a lot of stores carry it. If you have a good relationship with a 'beer guy' maybe they can check the availability for you.

Me too I don't care for it. I find it sweet thick and often fruity and even though the head fellow comes out to say it tastes like raspeberry, I don't find that to be what I want in a lager. I also don't think it's a vienna lager.

I do enjoy Elliot Ness as well. That is a great brew.

Me either. @JackHorzempa has it right upthread by describing it as an American Amber Lager. There's not any real Vienna Malt character to it, just crystal malt.

Sam Adams Boston Lager does indeed have a strong malt backbone (particularly if it has some age on it). I personally have never perceived any fruity flavors (and nothing like Raspberry).

You might enjoy a super fresh Sam Adams more? To my palate a super fresh Sam Adams does not have as strong of a malt flavor so it might be less sweet to your palate.

    Cheers!

I remember liking the black lager a lot. Also need to resample the noble pils since that's my go to style. My favorite SA has to be the cream stout though!
Side note: This summer I've been enjoying the SA light. It seems juuust light enough to carry the name and with the (slightly) lower ABV and calorie count, it makes me feel a little better about myself (LOL)!

Ha! You fine gentlemen in New Jersey, New York, and New York get Boston Ale and I never see it in Boston.

Makes me feel like a Vermonter.

Eliot Ness is a tasty beer. Unfortunately the ABV ( 6.2%) is way too high to be sessionable.
