I like the oatmeal and imperial stouts a good amount, I think they're pretty accurately rated 'round these parts.

Looks like I've reviewed nine of their offerings and, except for a 3.25 rating for their nut brown ale, I've given them ratings around 4.0 (+/- some fractions of a point) on average.

I suppose the reason might be that after enjoying numerous highly hopped American ales and double/triple imperial this and that, sours and barrel-aged behemoths, etc., well, I just enjoy a good, classic styled beer, perhaps emphasizing more malt subtleties than anything else. Kind of getting back to basics or re-calibrating the taste buds, I suppose...

Nut Brown Ale and Organic Chocolate Stout are pretty solid

I disagree. Most of their beers are well above average (with a couple of outstanding ones), IMO. Perhaps English-style beers aren't as robust or flavored as their American counterparts. This is, however, a style issue rather than some inherent flaw in Sam Smith brews.

Their organic strawberry ale is one of my favorites. The oatmeal stout and taddy porter are also very very good.

I happen to enjoy their beers, particularly the Imperial Stout, Oatmeal Stout and the Organic Chocolate stout.

Totally disagree. I think Samuel Smith is one of the finest breweries in England. Taddy Porter would get my vote for best porter in the world. Their beers are marvelous on tap, if you are lucky enough to have them in a pub in Britain.

It's more about the history and being true to the style....Samuel Smith is true to the craft of beer making and they do it well. The Strawberry Ale is the best ever....hits all the points needed to be outstanding....they don't have to be extreme to be good.

Yup. Love the oatmeal, porter, and chocolate. The Organic Chocolate may be the best. Rogue amd Youngs are close, but it is decadent. The only reason I don't drink more of them is price.

Great way to say it, that's where the history comes in....solid brews for the styles!

They aren't world class, but I think these are solid gateway beers to help people move towards craft.

So you've had the Strawberry Ale and don't like it? And why is an Organic Lager silly for an English Brewer? Lager is popular style and easy to make.....think what you think and drink what you drink but I just respect the brand.

If I could still find their Organic Best Ale it would be on regular rotation in my fridge.

Old Brewery Pale Ale is still a favorite, though they're hard to find. Nut Brown Ale, India Ale, Oatmeal Stout are regulars in my fridge. Pure Brewed Lager Beer is fantastic and would be in my fridge more often if I didn't have to drive to Houston to get it.

Needless to say, I love Samuel Smith. Have for 20 years.

Solid gateway beers, that are benchmarks (or damn near) for plenty of styles. But that is just my opinion.
