hi - planning a work trip to San Antonio and wondering if there's good local taprooms (near the convention center area) or at least good bars with good local offerings around the river walk area... thanks!

Not really. There is a German-style multi-tap but I forget the name. However you should stop to see the Buckhorn Saloon & Museum (not the museum, just grab a pint) as it's interesting to see and they do have a few good beers on tap, and just a block or so over is the Alamo where you can see the statue that Ozzy pissed on (more interestingly, he was wearing one of Sharon's dresses when he did it!). For everything else you really need to leave the center of town but there are places that are within "walking distance" or you could take the water taxi or an uber up to the Pearl for Southerleigh and The Granary. For the most part I'd avoid anything on the riverwalk downtown though, just tourist and over-priced places that don't deliver the goods. As far as breweries go I really liked a sour beer they had at Blue Star, and Freetail was good fun.

If you have no aversion to driving, you can seek out the Flying Saucer. If you are around over the weekend, The Cove is a good place to hang. The hoppy monk, is another. Downtown is not known for the best beer joints. If you are staying downtown and don't mind some walking hit up the Luxury and grab a snack and a beer and enjoy the scenery as you make your way to Southerleigh to have a couple of beers, but eat at Cured, I think the food there is top notch. Walk back towards downtown and go to the Alamo Street Eat Bar, which is a converted drivein and has some beers on tap and in bottles, not the best of places but had some good times there. Stella Public house is also downtown and has good taps
