Hi folks, My wife and I are flying to SD from NorCal, just to goof off, drink beer and pass time before eating turkey back at home on turkey day. I've been to SD before, and we've had some great food and beer. We usually travel with NorCal beer to share, and that usually means Pliny in growlers and/or bottles. Will have a rental car, and airbnb place on 30th St (University Park neighborhood?). Fly in noonish Friday, fly out Monday night. Q: I haven't really looked in SD before, is Pliny readily available? Would anyone be interested in some sort of meet and bottle/growler share? I like Auburn Ale house a lot and maybe could bring a growler of Berryessa beer. I searched the BA pages and have found some new breweries that we'll probably hit. Off the top of my head, we've been known to hit (and might go back to) Stone, Green Flash, Pizza Port (north, Carlsbad), Port, Lost Abbey, Alesmith, Hess, Hamilton's, Toronado, Linkery, Blind Lady Ale house, Monkey Bar, Ritual. Additional Suggestions for food and beer welcome, Thanks,
Thats funny because I'll be flying back to Sacramento on the 25 for Thanksgiving back home. I'll be bring some SD stuff with me and most likely sharing it at Final Gravity. Message me when you get down to San Diego and I am sure we can find some good beer to drink.
What DougOlis said! You have a car, you have to go to ALpine Beer Company(not brewing co.). It's on the 8 past Charger Stadium about thirty minutes or so. Pliny does make it down here, but not very much when it does come down. Check out Churchill's Pub in Escondido for good food and great beers. Check out Societe Brewing Co. and Hess brewing co. I haven't been there yet, but heard that they both had great beers.
Thanks for the tips. yes, I had planned on a drive out to Alpine, been there once before, during road construction. cheers,
Check out Modern Times brewery - it's unassuming in an industrial part of town, but they're making some great beer (and cool swag as well). Also, I second the above recommendation for Societe Brewing, they also have some great stuff. I always hit Neighborhood for food and awesome beer over in East Village when I'm in town. Enjoy, I'm jealous!
Waypoint Public just opened where The Linkery used to be located. I haven't been yet, but have heard good things. If you've already been here before I'd actually recommend trying places you didn't go to last time. Rip Current, Modern Times, Societe, Tiger! Tiger!, Hess (go to the one in North Park, there's a ton of stuff within walking distance), etc.
Not sure if I'm being creepy by "liking" the posts recommending Modern Times, but it warms the cockles of my heart when it happens. We get a fair number of people coming into the tasting room from out of town, and I know these kinds of recommendations help make that happen. The support means a lot to me.
I haven't had any interactions with the strip clubs yet, but I did meet the hilarious old swinger couple that owns the adult bookstore. Very friendly...they wanted to do a beer for merchandise trade. I haven't followed up on that, but they are super helpful about making change for us anytime we run out in the tasting room. They've got a bottomless (ha!) supply of $1s and coins.
For some reason, this makes me want to get a picture of a Les Girls dancer in one of Alex Tweet's shirts.
I'll be coming into town from Philadelphia during the first week of January and plan on checking out the tasting room. Honestly, I'm not sure that I would if it wasn't for all of the recommendations and positive feedback that I've read in the Pacific forum. There are too many places to visit and it's difficult to narrow down the list when you're only in town for a week or less.
Also, if you find yourself in Pacific Beach at any point (as I've been know to), Duck Dive and Thrusters both have excellent tap lineups. Thrusters has 44 taps, mostly local stuff.
