    Hello,

My future wife and I are taking our honeymoon to SF in late April, will be there for almost a week. While she enjoys craft beer too, I'm not trying to overload the itinerary with beer items. We're spending a day in wine country too, so I'm not pushing too had for a RR trip. If we have an extra day, then maybe, but we weren't planning on renting a car.

So, here's what I have come up with so far:

    - Dinner and drinks at Mikkeller one night.
    - Trip to Rare Barrel on Friday night (my fiance loves sours so this was an easy sell)
    - Drinks at Toronado, probably later afternoon some day, allowing me to try Blind Pig, Pliny on tap, maybe some Alpine.

Anything you would replace these suggestions with, preferably within the city? We are staying at Hotel Nikko in or near Union Square, I think. I am unsure how we are getting to Berkeley, any idea how much a Lyft/Uber would run (about 11 miles I think) or how accessible it is from public transport?

Any bottle shops near enough to my hotel that I could grab a couple things to drink during the week? I think my room has a fridge. I'm sure you get a lot of threads like this, but thanks for input.

You have to hit up Cellar Maker and City Beer Store right around the corner from Cellar Maker. Both worth the visit and accessible by BART or cab.

Thanks. Does Cellar Maker have food and if they do, is it good / not "bar food"? I can probably get away with adding more stuff to the itinerary if we're getting a nice meal out of it.

Also, should've added this to the original post, but any good non-beer, touristy things to do? I've been before (years ago though). I think we're taking a harbor cruise under the bridges, and also doing some hiking by the Redwoods, visiting the wharf, etc.

No, unfortunately they do not have food. There are a ton of great places to eat in the city, you just have to turn the block and something will be there.

There are the obvious touristy things, i.e. Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz (make arrangements sooner), Lombard Street is pretty cool if you haven't seen it before. There is quite a bit to do, all within mass transit.

I visited last year and I'd highly suggest renting a small car. City rent a car had one for $40-45 a day, and was well worth it. The first day there, we cabbed it, and we probably ended spending more on taxis in a day. At night, u may have to pay a fee for a garage or street parking but more convenient to have your own vehicle.

    I'd suggest visiting:
City beer store-prob have Pliny on draft
    Cellarmaker-bomb ipa's
Monks kettle- good food and draft/bottle selection
Mikkeller is a nice spot- great selection, check out the sour room downstairs
Speakeasy is by the Giants park- cool little spot
ZeitGeist- cool dive bar at night

Smugglers Cove- if u like rum cocktails, go here. 3 story spot
Bourbon & Branch- didn't make it, but heard great things

Honestly, didn't care for Toronado, but maybe they'll have a better selection on draft.

    Have fun out there!

Not to be argumentative but I would strongly suggest not getting a car if you're going to mostly stay in the city. Parking is extremely frustrating to non-existent in many SF neighborhoods. It will be $40+ per night at your hotel too. You can BART to Rare Barrel and mini/lyft/uber to get around the city. Use google maps on a smartphone to get good directions for public trans. If you go up to wine country, which you should if you have time, then you'll need a car or can get a service but that is pricey.

Would also say your spots are very good and would 2nd or 3rd Cellarmaker and City Beer. Plenty of good good nearby.

If you're in town on a Friday and the World Series Champion Giants are at home, Speakeasy does a killer outdoor event with tunes, grindage and their killer beers...
Also, Uber or Lyft may suit your fancy more than renting a car...remembering where you parked, having change for the parking meters, dealing with parking garages, one way streets, bad drivers and all the other bullshit...let someone else drive. It's worth it.

^reminds me that there is a new beer garden going in next to the ballpark. Might be something cool to check out and won't be far from where you're staying. I would expect a few good beers to be on tap there.

For a honeymoon week this should be very high on your list

be sure to sit downstairs or skip it
cheers to you & your future bride

if you can't do both La Trappe & Mikkeller - I'd go Mikkeller lunch & La Trappe dinner for an arguably better food selection

Wine Country. Where? How firm are your plans?

I ask because I (along with many, many other wine folk) encourage people to visit Sonoma as most tourists coming to "wine country" default to Napa.

Plus, the craft beer scene in Napa is practically non existent while Sonoma is fantastic craft beer country, so two birds with one stone!

As an occasional visitor of SF, I second the suggestion of using public transportation and Lyft/Uber, instead of renting a car. BART/MUNI are easy to use and can get you most places you want to go. From what I've seen, parking sucks/is super expensive, and cabs are basically non-existent.

I'm actually headed up to San Francisco in mid-April to get married(!), and will be staying at the Fairmont, so if the dates match up we could potentially meet up to share a bottle or two if you are interested. I have a surplus of Bruery stouts and sours and would be up to bringing a couple of celebratory beers in the suitcase to share.

My wife and I went to San Francisco on our honeymoon a couple years ago as well. We actually stayed in Hotel Nikko our first night there. We hit Toronado, City Beer Store and also Monks Kettle and I'd recommend each of them. The first day we were there we got a City Pass which covers bus, trolley and cable car for the week. I think it included a free cruise at the wharf and and entry into some other things also. It was free for us, but would've been well worth the money as we used it all day every day, except one day that we rented a car to go Napa Valley.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. We have some type of Groupon-like activity that is shuttling us to wine area, but can't remember if it's Sonoma or Napa. I've been adding everything suggested into a custom Google Map so I'll have a better idea of when we are close to something as we spend the week out there. Definitely will look into a city pass, too.

Never get tired of reading that, World Series Champion Giants. Congrats OP, looks like you should be good with all these locations on your google map. Just wander around the city and you're bound to run into something fun.

If your fiance loves sours then in my opinion a visit to Russian River is a no brainer.

If you are looking for nice restaurants that happen to have a very good beer selection, I would suggest both Anchor & Hope (walking distance from Union Square), and Stone's Throw (on Russian Hill, and on a cable car line).

Thanks for everything guys. Question I have is would you say Mikkeller has good enough food for dinner or should that be more of a mid afternoon or lunch stop?

    Second Stone's Throw. Awesome place.

I stay 2 blocks from Nikko on a weekly basis. 3 blocks up the hill from Nikko is Hogwash, home made sausages and 20 taps, just opened. 2 blocks from there is Hopwater Distribution - 30 all CA taps. Chicken sando/Crab tater tots. Both casual.

Abbot's Cellar has excellent food, more upscale and an awesome selection (run by same folks as previously mentioned Monk's Kettle a couple blocks away). My wife loves the chocolatier next door to AC.

Near Cellarmaker/City beer (across Folsom from CB) for food, Triptych is hit or miss, sometimes great, sometimes not great at all. Basil Thai a couple doors down is excellent.
