I'm attending a conference in San Francisco in a week. Any recommendations on can't miss breweries while I'm there? Thanks.

I posted this last Wed, so umm just copying and pasting at this point:

You're asking a question that's been asked a thousand times already, and you're clearly too lazy, or think too little of our time to do a 30 second scan of the forum.

Respect our time, do a little research, and if you still have specific questions then I guarantee you that people on this forum will happily and quickly provide answers.

I'll really only have one day to do much moving about outside of the downtown area. I'd prefer to find places within reach of public transport (starting from downtown) but would consider renting a car if there is somewhere I should really visit. I'm not interested in bars so much. I'd prefer tap rooms that have specialty aged beers on tap that aren't bottled/distributed. I do prefer a well done beer in any style over a so so beer in my preferred styles, which are English barleywines, whiskey barrel aged stouts, malt balanced DIPAs, maybe a quad or grand cru, and sours. Not knowing the scene, it looks like I should visit The Rare Barrel, Cellarmaker, Drakes (is this too far away?), and 21 Amendment. If I have time then possibly, Triple Rock, Southern Pacific, and Almanac. If I still have time then maybe Voodoo or Mateveza. Any disagreements with what I have planned? Is it logistically possible? I arrive Saturday afternoon, have all day Sunday, Monday until the late afternoon and evenings after the conference Tues/Wed.

I'll just say that you left out City Beer and Toronado. Those would be my top two and they're BART friendly for the most part. Here: www.beerbybart.com

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into City Beer and Toronado and I appreciate the beerbybart link; I didn't know of it and it's great. Thanks.

If you end up going to Berkeley, I'd recommend the Rare Barrel (haven't been myself, but I have a lot of friends who are members) and Ledgers Liqours - awesome beer selection and cheaper than most bottles in SF.

Good deal, a lot more to work with here.

First, I think the place you're going to like the best is going to be Cellarmaker. It's a conveniently located brewery with a cool taproom. 21st Amendment is pretty close as well, but honestly it feels way more like a bar than a taproom. I know you're not into bars, but I'd definitely still check out Mikkeller bar and Toronado. I think you'll like the former more than the latter, but Toronado is an iconic beer bar and usually has some tasty stuff on tap/in bottles.

The Rare Barrel has stupid hours, so unless you go straight there after landing on Saturday, you're not going to make it while they're open. Drakes is OK, but it's honestly a bit annoying to get to without driving, and I tend to think their beers are mediocre at best. I've heard good things about Triple Voodoo now that they have their own spot in the city, but have no actual experience. Faction is a great taproom across the bay too, but a real pain in the ass to get to by public transportation.

If you are willing to rent a car, I think your best brewpub experience would be to take Sunday and drive up to Petaluma to check out Lagunitas, then Santa Rosa to check out Russian River - and if you're not tired of driving continue on up to Healdsburg and see Bear Republic.

Or, rent a car and head south to Aptos (near Santa Cruz) and check out Sante Adarius, who are making some of the best beers in the bay right now and have an awesome little taproom. Then you can check out Aptos St. BBQ for some great BBQ and an excellent taplist before scenically winding you way back along the CA coast up HWY 1 back to the city.

Off your original list, I'd nix Mateveza, Drakes, Southern Pacific (honestly don't know anything about them, so maybe go?) and Almanac (they don't have a taproom).

Southern Pacific is an extremely cool location (hasn't been nearly that busy when I've been there, BTW) and the food is solid, but the house beers I've had there have been just OK. They usually have some decent guest taps, too.

day trip to RR would be worth it if you can check out the other places on your other days.

i would recommend against driving further up to go to Bear Republic

just comes off as a tad excessive - going on a rant talking bout "respect our time". kind of ironic too.

it's annoying, but these threads are always going to pop up. don't think OP was being that big of a dick starting the thread

Eh, we'll disagree on this one. OP seemed to understand why I posted that though, and posted a far better post which no doubt will/has lead to some useful information for him.

Frankly, the OP was being lazy when he first posted, and I wanted to let him know why he wasn't going to get the kind of answers he was looking for. And why people were going to be actively annoyed at him for asking it in the first place. I think my response was better than the past responses to these questions, which was just to recommend the worst possible places people could come up with.

I was there last week for a conference and Mikkeller was a go-to for me based on tap-list and distance from my hotel. Pricey though. Nice to have Avery Tweak on tap.

Another good one-two punch is beer and pizza at Pi Bar (supplication on tap last week), then over to Zeitgeist, which has some great taps at great prices, and a wicked patio.

Southern Pacific is indeed a great building with average beer.
