Anybody go to the takeover last night? I wanted to check out some of the San Tan pilot beers that looked interesting. Unfortunately, work intruded its beer-paying-for head. Never been to TTOs at Flanny's, so I don't know what the crowd is like for 'em. I assume large. How was the beer?
I didn't go to this take over but a buddy did and he said the crowd was as (BIG) as usual thought not a big as when they Did Lost Abbey or DogfishHead. He said most of the rar(er) stuff was gone by 9 pm. He said the best stuff was some date flavored beers SanTan made. He didn't mention Geek (the Gordo with espresso beans) which seemed interesting to me. Be advised Flanny's does $12 growlers of ANYTHING left after a take over starting the next day until it is gone. That includes stuff that might have been $5 -$9 a pour...so you may still be able to get something good. They do a different brewery tap takeover every third Thursday i guess. I went to the Flanny's take over for Stone (it was great; lots of beers, lots of people and stuff last til around 9- 10 and i don't like Stone, in general, at all) I also went for their Colorado beer night (which i think was the BEST event of AZ beer week in PHX area) pack to the doors but great beer. My buddy who has been to almost allt he tap take overs says that even when it is crowded it isn't too hard to get a beer and the waits aren't long, though i heard the PHX beer geeks were upset about the time they did Four Peaks, saying the lines were very very long and stuff sold out fast.. John and JohnJr are very amiable, knowledgeable and super cool guys. I can't really say enough about Flanny's the place is awesome.... I just hate the location and that they seem to change the menu and kitchen hours all the time and then they say it has never changed...But as far as the beer offerings and the prices and the (great) attitudes of the staff..its top notch. Plus they now have a nice little cooler in which they stock only rarer/seasonal stuff. They even are pretty good at updating their web page and twitter with the draft list.
San Tan TTO was good, I have been to most of them at Flannys and they worked all the bugs out of the big crowds. I loved the Bitter Axe and Speed date by San Tan. If you haven't been to Flannys it is one of the best places in AZ.
I had (easily-offended) friends who had a problem there on a non-TTO night, but my personal experience is that the Johns are great people, and have really made an effort to get the good stuff in a nice place. I've been for trivia but not TTO. thus far
