I know there are plenty of waxing threads but figured I'd start my own since I haven't heard of this one before.

I waxed a bunch of bottles with some spare unscented candle wax I had lying around and I've been relatively happy with the results but once I ran out of that wax I melted down a heavily scented candle and used that because it's a good seal and I didn't think the scent would matter. That was about 6 months ago and I finally got around to drinking a bottle I waxed with the scented stuff. The scent from the wax had totally permeated into the bottle and the nose of beer was overpowered by the wax scent. It was pretty awful although if I plugged my nose while drinking the taste wasn't impacted too much. It was a much bigger problem on the less intensely flavored beers (Orval) but it was still obvious in a BB stout.

I've now broken/cut all that wax off of those bottles but I'm sure the damage is already done and I screwed up a few really nice bottles.

Obviously there are a lot of opinions on whether or not wax helps seal the bottle and prevent the bottle from oxidizing but I'm now a firm believer that there is a whole lot more transfer through the bottle cap than most people think.

Until you drink more than one of the bottles you don't know that it wasn't a problem with the one bottle

Sorry for not being clear, I drank multiple after I found the problem and the scent is unmistakable in all of them.

Step 1: Remove wax from bottles of Dark Lord.
    Step 2: Melt a vanilla-scented candle.
Step 3: Dip bottles of Dark Lord in vanilla wax.
Step 4: Set bottles aside for a couple years.
    Step 5: ?
    Step 6: Profit.
