Schell's Fort Road Helles

it's year-round…I just hope they put it in 12pks

 

well glad it's year round, but I'm cool with six packs. I normally don't drink the same beer enough to buy a 12 pack, but this may be one of the exceptions.

 

So I was at a tasting tonight, and the representative from Schell's said the farm where they get the malt from for this beer, was heavily damaged by softball sized hail last week. They are hoping the barley will stand back up and everything will be ok. If it's not, they might have to get the malt from elsewhere.

Would like to know the clarification, but I can't read Facebook video. Care to summarize the statement in writing?

 

Per their Facebook page:

August Schell Brewing Company The field did receive hail, not softball sized though. We are optimistic about the outcome of the barley and should know more in a few weeks when it is set for harvest. We also have a good supply remaining from last year's crop!

Just got back from a vacation in MN. Brought back a 6 pack of this fine beer and Schell's was one of the breweries I visited and by far the best brewery tour. Beyond the beer, which I really enjoyed the Here,and pilsner, Firebrick, and APL, the tour was awesome. The tour guide had a passion for the history of the brewery and it really was a great tour. Then the setting, brewery grounds, mansion, deer run, etc were all awesome. Loved the experience and will always be a Schell's fan!

I hope you also got to visit their Starkeller taproom when you were in New Ulm.

 

Just wanted to add to comments about how awesome this beer is. I love how lighter beers are being brewed in a world dominated by IPAs, Wild Ales, and Imperial Stouts. You can't hide flaws in these types of beers, so it takes a great brewer to make such an excellent beverage. I have had this and Summit Keller Pils in my fridge all summer. Great prices for great beer.

 

Every beer judge in America needs to try this beer in order to fully understand what Helles is supposed to taste like. Of course there are others but in my opinion this is one of the top two or three in America.

 

No we were not able to but we will be that way again and it will be in our plans.

Which ones do you have as better?

 

I should amend what I said by saying Schells Helles is the best one in America especially when it's tasted at the brewery. I have found many beer styles don't travel well and this is one of them.
