When I started drinking beer this was the second best selling brew in the USA (Bud was #1). At least to me all the beers back than tasted the same not bad just the same. This beer does seem to be a bit hoppy compared to AAL today and has a bit more body and is a bit sweeter. I'm glad craft came along!

that is like the only pale lager i enjoy drinking. i dont go to it often, but its a decent, and cheap, pale lager option... thats for sure

I like it, and it's cheap. It's a shame for Schlitz that they were so cheap in the 70's.

It has been a while since I have drank a Schlitz 1960s Formula Beer but I enjoyed drinking it at that time.

It is my understanding that the beers are now simply labeled as Schlitz but they are brewed per the 1960s resurrected formula according to a post by @oldsyd:

According to the Schlitz Brewing FB page, all Schlitz is now the "Gusto" or "Original '60's Formula". For some reason, JOS. Schlitz Brewing Co. isn't really promoting the post-2008 formula anymore.

    Cheers!

I actually find it to be not cheap enough to consider buying most of the time. In the places I see it, it usually runs about $8 a six (+deposit). For that I can get a six of Narragansett seasonal (far better) or a couple six packs of Narragansett Lager, Gennesse Cream Ale, or a six of a lower tier craft option. I see no reason to buy it. I don't think it's better than anything I listed that is cheaper or of equal price.

My last purchase of Schlitz 1960s Formula beer was special ordered for me by a local beer store. I asked the manager why he didn't regularly stock this beer and his response was the cost; he didn't think his customers would be willing to pay the extra cost vs. purchasing other AAL beers.

    Cheers!

By the time I started drinking beer (legally) Schlitz was already in a death spiral. I have to take their word that the "Gusto" formula is really how they made it in the 60s. That said I've tried it and found it ok, but like Sweatshirt I find it priced here in KY within a buck of something like Falls City and BBC brews which IMO are far superior options. IF it was 7.99 a 12 pack I might be all over it, but not at 7.99 a sixer.

That sucks, the bottle shops by me sell it for around $8 or $9 a 12 pack.

They may be charging extra for the novelty of the tall boy cans and then adding a dollar for nostalgia. I don't know why it costs that much. I'll stick with my $3.99 tall boy sixer of Genny Cream.

$10.99/12pk here. More expensive than PBR, cheaper than Bud, tastes better than both.

I don't always drink American Adjunct Lagers, but when I do...

I first was tuned into Schlitz when I hosted a blind taste test with the following results:

    1. Schlitz
    2. Hamms (tie)
    2. Natural Light (tie)
    3. Grain Belt Premium
    4. Milwaukee's Best Light
    5. Bud Light

I was surprised all these Bud and Miller drinkers picked Schlitz. Then I saw on BA that it was the highest rated AAL. Then I discovered that people thought there were still 2 different Schlitz's out there, and after some digging found out there's only the post 2008 brew being made now. I think BA should retire the old pre-2008 version since it most likely is not available and if it is, you shouldn't be drinking it.

And, Schlitz (JOS. Schlitz Brewing Co. (Pabst)) should be doing a better job of educating people that the new packaging without all the gusto verbage is NOT the old yuckier version.

EDIT: Look what I found in my spam folder!

Saw this offered at a favorite Dallas burger joint on Monday and I was tempted, but wanted to eat to go so I figured I'd wait on it. I'm planning on searching for a sixer of it it this weekend though, seems like an appropriate Super Bowl Sunday beer. As the highest rated AAL on BA, I'm definitely interested in trying it. Just wanna see what that style is like when it's done right.

Tried for quite awhile to find this in PA...wasn't able to. The Schiltz website showed distributors that had it, but they didn't. I would be interested in trying this beer. Anyone seen it in PA recently?

FWIW, I have also had issues getting this beer in SEPA (see my posts above). The best advice I can give is to ask a beer retailer that you know to 'special order' it for you.

    Cheers!

Yea, here in MA 12 pack bottles go for around 12.99, 6 pack pounders 7-8 bucks so basically the same as Bud. Usually opt for Narragansett when looking for a cheaper priced Lager. Schlitz is also really hard to find, usually only the big box stores carry it.
