At my local beer bar (Teresa’s Next Door) they sell the bottles for around 7-8 dollars.

They also periodically have Mahr’s beers on tap; both regular tap and more occasionally on cask.
I have a penchant for cask beer so I prefer it on cask but I also very much enjoy the regular draft and bottled versions. From my perspective, Mahr's Ungespundet-hefetrüb is a tasty beer no matter how it is served.

    Cheers to Mahr’s!

I had to run an errand which took me pretty close to Teresa’s Next Door so …

@mjtierney2 I conducted the $7.50 experiment and ordered a bottle of Mahr's Ungespundet-hefetrüb and poured half into a Mahr’s Brau branded Steinkrug and half into a pint glass (branded Sierra Nevada).

The first thing I noted was that the aroma from the glass was noticeably more vibrant. There was not much nose from the Steinkrug beer. Upon the first sips from both vessels I noticed that the flavor from the glass was more vibrant (I suspect because of the more noticeable aroma?). One aspect that I noted from the Steinkrug beer was that the beer had a softer mouthfeel; maybe the rougher texture of the Steinkrug ‘knocks out’ more carbonation?

The beer in the glass had a hazy orangey/amber color which was appealing to me.

Anyway, for me aroma/flavor trumps mouthfeel so the ‘winner’ was the glass.

@Crusader, you might be interested in knowing that I perceived very little to no yeasty flavor from this bottled Mahr's Ungespundet-hefetrüb (which is consistent with my past times drinking Mahr's Ungespundet-hefetrüb from the bottle). While I find it interesting that Mahr's Ungespundet-hefetrüb from the cask has a yeasty bite to it, I really do not miss this particular quality from the bottled version.

    Cheers!

FWIW, Mahr's recently (as in within the last 3-4 years) moved from serving U in the Steinkrug to a using glass mug. Surprise, surprise...I prefer the Steinkrug. Not only is there something about the soft carbonation and soapy-looking head...but perhaps most importantly, there's little risk that the beer will skunk from being light-struck when you're drinking it outside in the Biergarten. I even like to provide extra protection (from the light and the bees) by using a traditional wooden lid.

You can't drink that beer out of a glass vessel. Everybody knows that!:stuck_out_tongue:

    Cheers!

Actually, Spezial and Schlenkerla both serve out of glass (the former out of a glass Seidla and the latter out of a Willibecher); it's only outdoors at the Spezialkeller where they serve it in a Krug.

One of the spots I hit in Bamberg served in clay Krugs indoors -- it's where I learned to lay the mug on its side to signal the waitress for another beer.

    Mahrs maybe?

Mahr's used to serve U in the Krug both indoors and outdoors. That's probably where it was.

Only other place I received a clay Krug as standard was Forschungsbrauerei, but I remember getting St. Georgan Bräu Kellerbier in a clay Krug at a tavern in Bamberg -- can't recall if it was SOP or I requested the Krug.

St. GeogenBraeu serves the Kellerbier in Steinkrugs at the taproom in Buttenheim. Very tasty stuff.

IIRC, the only time I got bier served in a steinkrug during my trip last year was at what had been the Kalt-Loch Brauerei in Miltenberg and that was a Doppelbock.

Most of the smaller places in the countryside around Bamberg serve beer in the Steunkrug, especially at the Bierkeller but often inside, too. Of course I would order Kellerbier 90% of the time, so I'm probably not getting a fully representative look.

I've been drinking beer in German for a year, and I've yet to have one served in a steinkrug. Hopefully one day...

I'm losing it. I also had bier in a Steinkrug at Hümmel and Wagner in Merkendorf and at Elch-Brau in Thuisbrunner.
