Over the 22 yrs I lived there, I always said Shv needed a brewery - hope Great Raft makes a go of it.

Another vote for Gordon Biersch, at least from their brewpubs. I don't know what the quality is like in the bottled product.

Live Oak's Schwarzbier is also quite good but I don't think it distributes outside of Texas.

Yes it's a collaboration with Heavy Seas and Devil's Backbone called Land Ho. Also very good. =)

Dont get Krombacher, trust me. Offensive at best.

Locally LoneRider did a great one, as does Duck-Rabbit.

Sam Adams Black Lager is decent and comes in 6-packs

I recently started buying the Monschof Schwarzbier. A good brew at a decent price ($3.29) and the bottle is great for homebrew.

I had thought that DB had their own Schwarzbier as well. I know it isn't called Land Ho when I have seen it in bottles before.

How could I forget to suggest August Schell Chimney Sweep, a Schwartzbier that is a bit smokey (I think it's brewed with some smoked malt?), but not over-the top at all.

    I'm glad I bought 2 six-packs when I did because I can't find it anymore. :astonished:

Unfortunately it's only available for half the year and its "season" is nearly over. The beer that replaces it for the other 6 months months is their Gose.

    Seconding Saranac Black Forest.
A lot of their beers might be mediocre, but they make some pretty damn good lagers.

Did they just change that? Because I looked at the Schell web site a couple weeks ago and could swear I saw it listed as year-round.

We might want to forward an update to the BA profile too.

I'm not sure how it was listed on their website before, but it's listed as an "Extended Seasonal" now. For some reason I knew it was only available for part of the year, maybe due to their Facebook page?

My favorite German brewed version is Monschof Schwarzbier.

My favorite US brewed versions are Shiner Bohemian Black Lager, Susquehanna Pils Noir, Sam Adams Black Lager and Jack’s Abby Smoke & Dagger.

    Cheers!
