SC shout out: Westbrook Dark Helmet. It has a nice smokiness that meshes well with the chocolate and coffee notes. Worth a shot. +1 on all the Duck Rabbit tributes.

Pretty sure you just stepped over to the Munich Dunkel style of dark lager with the Gösser. There is a difference between the styles.

Regarding Duck Rabitt... is anyone aware of an online beer place that ships DR, NB, FFF, and Russian River to NY?
I've been hearing good things about DR's Schwarzbier. This is probably my next new beer to try.

I'm not a huge fan. I always get a strong metallic taste from schwarzbiers and dunkels.

Bruisin' Ales in Asheville, NC should be able to help.

I'd love to see a radiation of this style. It's definitely one of my favorites.

I liked it, but I think DR Schwarz is quite a bit better, and it comes small format!

That's the Schwarzbier for people who love FBS IMO. I had a year-old bottle (not aged, just didn't realize the age when I grabbed it) that was still very coffee-forward.

I've only had two of them (Kostritzer was one, can't remember the other) but they were both great; easily the most sessionable, thirst-quenching 'dark beers' I've ever had. Unfortunately they're just not very easy to find around here; imports are pretty scant (I'd have to either cross the border into Michigan, or go on a two hour road-trip to find some), and if there are actually any local/Ontario breweries that brew a schwarzbier, it obviously isn't very widely distributed because I can't remember seeing any, ever.

I love a good Schwarzbier. Not nearly enough representation among American breweries. I agree with some of those above saying that Duck Rabbit Schwarzbier & Westbrook Dark Helmet are both very good, even if not traditional examples of the style. Monshchof is also very good, I would love to see this style become more popular in the US

Not a fan of the Westbrook myself. The best Schwarzbiers are much lighter in body, and have a clean lager taste. Westbrook's is far too malty and heavy in body IMO. (Plus at $8 for 22 oz. they are prohibitively expensive.)

I'm a fan. My favorite is Klosterbier from Anacortes Brewing.

Count me in as one who enjoys this style as well and I just had SA's again the other day...luckily the Wegmans near me has the singles available more often than not.

Triumph Brewing Co. in Old City makes a good one as well.

Not trying to be prickly about the subject but I thought the discussion was on Schwarbiers not Dunkels and I would appreciate your imput on the differences.I love to learn about styles and I don't have a problem when I am wrong. Cheers

To myself they all sort of fall into the same catagory except Schwarbier has a better mouthfeel to it and slightly darker in appearance, this includes Schwarbier,Dunkels, and Dark lagers.

Coming from Wisconsin, Sprecher Black Bavarian is an easy find and enjoyable. But for me, the best Schwarzbier I've had came from Surly from Minnesota

It is, but Gösser Dark is considered a Dunkel by most sources.

Schwarzbiers tend to be roastier and drier than most Dunkels (these days, anyway), not to mention darker in color. Dunkel is smoother and breadier, softer on the palate.

No big shakes, just different beers.

Unless they discontinued the 6 packs since I haven't looked for it in a while. I'm not sure whether or not it is seasonal either.
