I remember getting the Shiner once- it may have been in a variety sixer of theirs. I recall that I thought pretty much the same thing about both the Schwartzbier and the Alt- well made beers that hit all the right notes, but missing that little something that would put them in the upper eschelon. I wouldn't mind having a session with either of them under the right conditions, though.

Agreed about the Sam Adams- one of their best beers.

Moonlight Death & Taxes is great. If they ever open their tap room, I can start sharing growlers with people.

I agree with you. Needless to say but the judges at the GABF have a differing perspective since they awarded the Shiner Bohemian Black Lager a Gold Medal. I will be in Texas next month visiting family (and attending the Wurstfest in New Braunfels) and I will drink some Shiner beers then. It will be interesting to see whether Shiner has ‘kicked it up a notch” since they won three Gold medals at the GABF this year:

    · Gold: Shiner Oktoberfest, Spoetzl Brewery, Shiner, TX
    · Gold: Shiner Bock, Spoetzl Brewery, Shiner, TX (American Dark-style Lager)
    · Gold: Shiner Bohemian Black Lager, Spoetzl Brewery, Shiner, TX

    Cheers!
