I just got the 10 gallon electric brew easy, and we tried it out the first time yesterday.

Towards the end of mashing, we noticed a burning smell, and after the boil, we discovered quite a lot of burned material on the boil coil.

I was under the impression the boil coil would not scorch wort, so what could have caused this? My current theory is that some grain escaped from the mash tun above and got onto the coils. Has anyone had this happen? Any other possible explanations?

Brew'in ain't easy ...well, yeah it is...provided your mash tun is separate from your boil kettle

In the brew easy, the mash tun is separate from the boil kettle.

I have a lot of Blichmann made equipment and most of it is well made. How could grain escape your mash tun? I don't get it (I guess you don't either) More info needed...cheers

Yea, sorry, I don't either. I was just speculating because I couldn't think of any other way for there to be scorching on the boilcoil during the mash. It definitely happened during the mash because we all smelled it.

If I had crushed the grain too finely, could that cause some of it to escape and land on the boil coil below and cause this to happen?

I've been using a boil coil with a brew in the bag approach for several batches running. I have noticed that there can be a thin accumulation of grain dust on the coil, and maybe it burns onto the coil a little? I don't know that burns is the right term. Soaking in hot oxyclean solution and moderate scrubbing seemed to help. I have not notice burnt flavors.

Heating elements collect stuff. It's just part of brewing on an electric system. If you can control the percentage of how much juice you are sending your elements. Dial it back.
