As a Vermonter, I envy all the awesome Michigan beers I assume you can get. I’m a skeptic about the whole drink from a can thing. Once I poured an old Heady into a glass and there were lots of chunks of sludge (not typical). Anytime I order a Heady or Focal I immediately add - with a glass. a few years ago we were at the Alchemist when Kimmich and his wife were decorating a Christmas tree in their beer cafe and my wife ordered an Imperial Stout (Squidgy Black?)in a bottle and Kimmich came over to supervise the pouring to make sure she didn’t end up with any sludge. She also insulted him by complimenting him on finally having some stouts.
I collect Victor* mugs (and modern repros of that classic diner mug design) so when one breaks (like the Miss Worcester Diner below) they go on my Diner/Roadside book shelf. *VICTOR embossed branding on base of mug on right.
Is it negatively impacting the drinking experience, or is it just an aesthetic thing? Only you can answer that. I wouldn't toss a glass I have a personal attachment to, but beyond that, sometimes a replacement/upgrade is the right call. Cheers!
Yes, but sometimes I forget. The dried brown sludge issue only occurs about once a month so it’s not a very big issue. I still follow my same rigorous measures to keep my glasses in like-new condition. That is until one inevitably falls and breaks…
I think the aesthetic portion is negatively impacting my drinking experience. Like, is the inside of the glass so worn from use/washing/this, that, the other thing...other people washed it, etc. Again, some of the glasses are 25+ yrs old.
FYI, thrift stores for glassware, are your friends.....many, many of the hundreds of beer glasses I have, came from Goodwill and the like..
The steps I use to clean my beer glasses and avoid scratches, the last being the most important; Rinse with scalding-hot water Add dawn, and repeatedly run my fingers over every surface, inside and out Rinse with hot water until no soap bubbles are visible Dry with the dish-towel we've been using all week, and put the glass on the shelf When I use the glass, and inevitably get a bunch of bubbles where I apparently didn't clean it well enough, I turn the glass so that can't be seen in the picture
I do all of the above including using Dawn. It's really nice of her to show up every time I gotta wash the suds outa my grog
I’ve become kinda OCD minimalist last few years and always looking to reduce stuff and clutter anywhere possible around my house and property all the time. Any chipped or badly scratched glasses I would toss out and assess if they truly need replaced or can do fine without any replacements. I think many people get trapped into the “just in case we have people over” mindset of keeping too many things. Next thing you know, 5 years goes by and all those fancy beer glasses have barely/never been used. Free up space, and keep the essential glassware that you can recall are being used regularly. Give away surplus glass-wear to friends or family that you know previously don’t have any quality beer glasses in their house so you always know at least when you visit again, there should be at least 1-2 good beer glass for when you come over.
Garage sale if they are brewery labeled-Donate them, or use them as planters for herbs or succulent plants
Ahhh. I do have numerous beer drinking friends who own a 2nd home/cabin and I betcha they'd like a handful of actual beer glasses. Balsam Lake comes to mind...thanks for posting BA!
