You shut you dirty whorish mouth. But seriously, I love Sculpin and have never had a bad experience in its bottle form, but it is just a little bit out of my price range. I'd rather just wait til somewhere local has it on tap.

I reserve my expensive beers to Abrasive, Sours and BBA beers.

Sculpin is very good, but I will stick to purchasing it in the bars.

Big Eye on the other hand, at $8.99/sixer is getting some of my home business.

I was going to say that yes, there are stores that sell a sixer for $17. That is uncommon in CA. Ive seen a sixer for $10 and I can get a bomber at Trader Joe's for $6.79.

    Great beer.

People bagging on Sculpin is really an effect, primarily, of East Coast people who can't find it fresh. When I've had draft Sculpin I've been amazed, but I've never managed to find a bottle of it that tasted nearly as good.

Imagine all of a sudden, Gandhi Bot or even Heady began showing up on shelves in Cali. Except it was $20+ for a four pack, and it was all at least 4-5 months old. The "I don't get the hype over Heady" threads would be legendary.

    It's all perspective.

Not the same beer when it first came to my area in bombers. It was a citrus juice bomb and wicked dry - now its a malt bomb and not that hoppy in a bottle. Ok choice when nothing better is on tap, sometimes its pretty good, sometimes just ok. Sad to see a once great ipa (greenflash wc ipa too) go flacid due to a ramp up in production. Don't remember paying $17 for a six pack though - cause I probably would have ignored it at that price.

You either don't like hops or you don't like WC style IPAs. I could see you not liking one of those beers, but all of them? You have issues.

Part of being overrated is folks not wanting to pony up the high price. Many have stated they enjoy the beer but it is too expensive. Others say it's worth it, pretty much at any price. But for those who don't understand the hesitancy to part with that much cash for a sixer are loaded; either with cash or beer! So in that respect it is most defintely overrated to alot of beer drinkers. This "fresh taste" argument goes on for many breweries with the fans closest to that spot always saying it's easy to get it fresh. Yeah, for you but the rest of the nation has a tougher time of it. If the taste falls off the cliff sooner rather than later, at $15 or more a sixer the risk/reward factor makes it a dicey proposition. Up until recently I never understood the allure of this beer but have finally had some fresh Sculpin with an amazing aroma; one of the best! BUT, the taste just doesn't follow through for me and I have had fresh more than once by now. In any case isn't it time to put the "Is Sculpin Overrated?" threads in the retired bin. Enough already. You tasted it, it's overrated/too expensive/not fresh, etc... just don't buy it again. Now let's start bashing Ten Fidy for costing the same $15 but for just four 12 oz cans!

    Over hyped? YES

    Over priced? Subjective, but YES

    Delicious? YES

Worthy of alot of it's praise. If it was not at the least very good, it would not get over hyped.

About $16 a sixer here, and not very fresh, so I buy other. I get Very Fresh White Rajah for about $12, and in my opinion, just as good if not better.

“Might have been out of date (though I doubt the tap version…”

I have had Sculpin on tap about a dozen times. Out of those dozen times the beer was of “wow” quality 3-4 times. The other times it was an OK beer. I used to assume that if I found a beer like Sculpin on tap that it would be fresh. I no longer think that way. Either the other 8 (or so) times I had Sculpin on tap it was not fresh (or the brewery produced ‘bad’ batches).

To repeat what victory4me posted: “definitely the most inconsistent” IPA that I have ever drunk.

If you add that a six-pack costs around 17 bucks (what they cost in PA), this beer is not worth buying at that price considering the inconsistency aspect.

    Cheers!

That might have something to do with your location, $17 IS a lot of money for any six pack in general, but I don't like IPAs and when I poor a fresh Sculpin it is a delight to drink

Odell IPA is my go to when I want a nice, tropical IPA at a reasonable price and it seems to hold up well, too. I love Sculpin and it is my special occasion beer when almost fresh, and it's the nectar of the gods on tap.

Overpriced but not over rated in my opinion. It's a mighty fine beer, but certainly a no brainer when I can buy a 4-pack of fresh HT for 12.00 as opposed to a 6-pack of Sculpin for 15.49. At 19 cents an ounce I'll choose Heady every day of the week.

Sculpin is rated precisely how individuals rate it, neither over or under.

We recently got Green Flash and Ballast Point in MN (very fresh stock) and both WCIPA and Sculpin taste like Jesus candy. WCIPA is way better than I remember.

I have only had this brew twice, and both times I could hardly finish the bomber. Too much onion flavor for me. I still don't get the hype either.

Its price makes it completely useless to me. Good beer. Terrible beer for the money.

I don't think it's over-rated, just over-priced. Those are two different categories there.

I like the beer a lot, but I think my view of it is a bit skewed living in San Diego. I never buy it in bottles, maybe buy it in cans if I'm camping, and buy it on tap when there's nothing else good on. Which isn't meant to sound like a slight; it's on tap EVERYWHERE, which means I'm going to choose something I see less frequently when I'm at a beer bar, but be very happy to see it when I'm at any other kind of bar or restaurant.

    Overpriced - without question
    Overrated - no
Overhyped - You have to be kidding me, with hyping on levels like what takes place for beers like Heady Topper, the "hype" around Sculpin barely makes a blip on the radar.
