You're entitled to your opinion. Just thought the idea that a beer is "fresh" at two weeks, but not at three was funny, that's all.

Beer Menus shows they're also offering 6-packs in bottles at $10.99 as well.

There has also started to be more competition amongst distributors.. up until a few months ago, Sculpin was only available through Atlantic in MA.. Craft picked up distribution on Ballast Point as well and they have FAR more fair pricing than Atlantic = Atlantic had to drop their pricing.

$14.99 per six pack, $7.49 per 22 oz. at brewery in Linda Vista still. $14 per growler fill.

I had hope that the price would come down at my local Whole Foods, which tends to be VERY reasonably priced across the board. Stopped in today and was pleased to see the new packaging, but disappointed at the $16.99 price tag. PASS.

Gotta go for an e-fist bump because Cursed also rules.

Yeah, but that's because it's at the brewery and as fresh as possible. If you go somewhere that still has old labels, chances are it's from July and around 12-13 bucks for a sixer.

I can confirm that Scuplin prices haven't gone down neither from the brewery or from distributors. Probably a store that wants to get it moving.

I remember seeing Sculpin bombers at like 8 to 10 bucks. Makes no sense.

Almost payed 16 bucks for a sixer today but then I saw that maximus was $10 for a sixer and I just couldn't allow myself to pay an extra six bucks just for the sculpin

I shopped at Total Wine in Orange County today. I took a look at six-pack prices and was surprised to see Sculpin at $13.99 for a sixer of cans. That sounds pretty good until you find a sixer of bottles going for $11.99!

I would love (LOVE) to see a large-scale blind taste test for all of the Freshness-Police here on BA. Then we could put this freshness debate to bed. I cannot honestly believe that people would consistently be able to pick out a two week vs a three week Sculpin.

HUGE difference. The flavor profile is just not nearly the same. It definitely starts falling off hard after about 16 days.

OK - will revise the blind taste test to be 15 day old Sculpin vs 16 day old Sculpin.

Anyone want to refine this further? Is 15 day old 16 hour Sculpin a shadow of its former 15 day old 15 hour self?

I'm genuinely curious--how did you arrive at 16 days for the threshold? I'm assuming that it involves some level of personal experience having a bottle that was 16 days old versus one that wasn't that old, however, the specificity of the number makes me curious.

Thanks for chiming in. But if that's how he knows, then he doesn't know.

Tasting notes are a decent guideline, but for the purpose of determining the falloff of a hoppy beer, they are wholly inadequate. At least not to that level of specificity. They would probably do just fine for distinguishing a one month old beer from a six month old beer.

Given how subjective the senses of taste and smell are, I'm of the opinion that the only real way to measure flavor falloff in a beer is to try two different bottlings of the same beer in close succession. That's the only way you can guarantee that the difference in taste comes from the beer, and not a subtle difference in palate or mood.
