Breakwater Brewing in Oceanside posted on their FB page that they'd have "a keg of pliny the younger on tap 4:30 Thursday," meaning yesterday. They didn't bother to mention that it was only a pony keg and that it had been mostly drained before this "event." The keg blew at 4:32 with about 80 people in the whole place and only half of them were in line. It's PTY ffs, people leave work early and get caught in rush hour traffic for this but they had no qualms using this as an opportunity to trick people into coming out. If you're only going to have enough for 20 pours or so, don't advertise having a keg. That's shady business.
Most of the Pliny kegs are 7.75 gallon. I agree that a few glasses of Pliny is not worth advertising.
I may be wrong. My experiences have been different. They usually announce that there are +/- 90 to 100 servings (10 oz).
They should have done what they did last year and not let people know until it was actually on draft. It was a 5 gallon keg last year as well. Stone had it back on yesterday and apparently there was no wait to get it.
Is it just me or does anybody else get a little joy out of reading posts like this? you made my morning a little brighter skunk242.
If you're leaving work early simply for a pour of PtY based on a post on facebook with no other relevant information...best i can say is caveat emptor. Shitty that they only had a partially filled pony keg, for sure. They should have (and probably did) know the crowd it would bring. But as long as people keep freaking out and descending in hordes every time someone on facebook mentions this beer, stuff like this will continue to happen.
If you look at their facebook page, they were hyping up the release for nearly a week. Seems pretty sketchy to have a pre-release where they drink nearly 75% of the keg when they've been claiming it would be tapped at a certain time. If you want to do a secret release for your regulars, that's cool (really that's how I wish everyone would do it), but don't try to make a big deal out of the regular release too when you clearly know there will barely be any left.
Oh the days when you could fill a growler of PtY at Hollingsheads and still drink pints of it the next week.
Oh the days when Vinnie had the time to come down to Hollingshead for a tasting featuring PtY, PtE, Supplication, Tempation, Damnation, and only about seven others. All for $25.
It's a real shame that Kirk McHale left Breakwater. He's up in Wyoming winning medals instead of brewing his delicious beer here in San Diego
I'm pretty sure that the congregation ale house in long beach pulled that too..or they shared one keg with their other locations :/
