Hey everybody, I have a question as to whether I can use my passport at bars and breweries in SD. I know that Churchill's has some BS house policy not letting you use a passport, but I was wondering if any of the others down there have this policy as well so I know who to steer clear of. Thanks.

I've been with several people who have used passports in SD without any problem.

Why wouldn't Churchills accept Passport as valid ID? Anyway, passports will be accepted pretty much anywhere. Passport cards may give you problems though...

In the state of California, as of January 1, 2010 a passport is considered an acceptable form of identification when purchasing alcohol. If Churchill's really doesn't accept passports, they are either unaware of the law or they're dickbags. Most places won't give you trouble.

    Per the ABC:

Effective January 1, 2010, Assembly Bills 59 and 1191 will become law and amend Section 25660 as follows (new provisions are in bold):
"Business and Professions Code Section 25660.
    1. bona fide evidence of majority and identity of the person is a document issued by a federal, state, county or municipal government, or subdivision of agency thereof, including, but not limited to, a motor vehicle operator’s license, an identification card issued to a member of the Armed Forces that contains the name, date of birth, description, and picture of the person, or a valid passport issued by the United States or by a foreign government.
    2. In the event an identification card issued to a member of the Armed Forces is provided as proof of majority and lacks a physical description, but does include date of birth and a photo, further proof of majority shall not be required.
    3. Proof that the defendant-licensee, or his or her employee or agent, demanded, was shown, and acted in reliance upon bona fide evidence in any transaction, employment, use, or permission forbidden by Section 25658, 25663, or 25665 shall be a defense to any criminal prosecution therefore or to any proceedings for the suspension or revocation of any license based thereon."

My girlfriend only has a passport for ID (she's American but doesn't drive) and she's never had a problem using it at any San Diego bars, including Churchill's. I don't know if that squares with official policies, but in practice it hasn't been an issue.

Ok, awesome, Churchills and SD are vital to the bachelor party plans, and it would really suck if I (the bachelor) got screwed for not having a DL. But it sounds like I should be fine, thanks for the knowledge.

I've only encountered one place that didn't take a passport. You should be fine.

passports are generally fine everywhere  but if you are worried, CALL BEFORE YOU GO!! never hurts to hear the house policies straight from the horses mouth rather via confused ba people

If a place really doesn't accept passports, that sounds somewhat suspect. Passports are largely carried by foreigners; you can't have a business policy that simply excludes foreigners.

I figured as much when the OP said they wouldn't take it. I feel like if the I.D. is issued by the federal government it HAS to be recognized, much like U.S. currency. What's the point of issuing it if people don't have to accept it?

OP: you could always call and if they tell you they don't accept passports you could make them aware of the law posted above.

I lost my driver's license once so I took my passport to buy beer and the grocery store wouldn't take it. I was dumbfounded. Passport trumps driver's license in the pecking order of ID's.

One could draw quite a few outlandish conclusions from a bar owner named "Ivan" not wanting anything to do with passports.

every bar operating is aware of what constitutes a bona fide id, but their house policies may be to not accept them

it really doesn't happen a lot, i can only think of two places that wont accept them in san diego!

This made me laugh out loud. But in all seriousness, he's a good guy. Back off before he gets his fat bearded security biker dude to throw you out the front door like Jazz in Fresh Prince.

Seriously. Why would you carry around a passport when it is incredibly easy to just get a CA ID?
