I have a friend flying out to Seattle and will also be heading over to Oregon. They said they would be willing to pick me up a few beers. Any recommendations on what to tell them to look for in bottle shops and or breweries?

First, it depends on what kind of beer you prefer. The more specific you can be about style, the more likely you are to get some beers you'll enjoy.

My advice, if you're just sending your friend blindly into bottle shops to buy you beer (Seattle): Go to Chuck's and have him ask Chuck what's local and good. Or go to Beer Junction and ask Morgan. Or 99 Bottles, or Bottleworks, or Full Throttle, or Last Drop... Someone at any of these stores should be able to help your friend pick out some good local beers.

My other piece of advice is to skim through the first couple of pages in the NW forum. I'm sure you'll find plenty of good advice.

Whatever Fremont has in bottles. Get a growler of something from Boneyard either in Washington or Oregon.

Pretty much anything except for Belgian/Wheat beers. Favorite styles would be Stout, Porter, IPA, DIPA, APA and Barley Wine. Thanks for the tips so far!

Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) is a solid brewery from Portland. I like all of their beers and it's an easy bottle to find.

If you like pumpkin beers (and don't think it's too goddamn early for pumpkin beers), Elysian has just released their lineup of bottled pumpkin beers --- Night Owl (in 12 oz. 6-pks), The Great Pumpkin (an imperial pumpkin in bombers), and Dark O' The Moon (a pumpkin stout in bombers).

This is good advice. Your question comes up pretty frequently, and there are a number of old threads with good advice on this topic. One thing I would mention... unless there is something unusual and/or specific to Washington you want to get, and so can't be obtained in Oregon, I would suggest that your friend make his purchases in Oregon. Sales tax in the Seattle area is just under 10%, while Oregon has NO sales tax whatsoever. It's not a huge deal if your friend is just buying $20 or $30 worth of beer, but if he ends up dropping a signficant amount of money on beer, the savings can be fairly substantial.

Don't listen to John. We need your tax revenue. Spend the extra 10% and help us continue to avoid state income tax.

Agree with drahelm - I like not having an income tax AND being able to pump my own gas.

Hilliard's Beers, Fremont Brewing and Two Beers are at the top of my list. I would recommend The Lamb from Fremont, which has been discussed in another thread.
