Flying into Seattle on Sunday, and driving to Port Townsend for work. If I had the oppertunity Sunday afternoon, is there anything along the way that I need to check out? I love stouts and porters, but I understand its not really that season yet. Probably have time driving back from Port Townsend on Thursday to check out a few places as well.

    Thanks in advance!

Engine House No. 9 in Tacoma and Propolis Brewing in Port Townsend. Neither are "dark" beer breweries, but worth your time.

Three Magnets in Olympia would however have the kinds of stuff you're looking for.

Sound brewing in Poulsbo is worth the stop as well. Also, not beer, but finnriver is a very tasty cidery right outside of Port Townsend.

Sound has a stout and a porter on tap right now, as well as several heavy belgian styles.

You could go north from the airport and hit some spots in Seattle. You could ferry across from Seattle, or drive north to Edmonds. There are options along the way. If you're not in a hurry, and want to see some scenery, go up I-5 to Mt. Vernon, take HWY 20 across Deception Pass, and into Oak Harbor. Flyers Brewpub is OH. There are other options too, and the Coupeville ferry lands you right in downtown PT.

Out of curiosity, what kind of work do you do that would take you to PT? Paper industry?

Port Townsend has Propolis if you are up for trying herbed beers. They are quite interesting.

I am up for trying anything that people in the area suggest.

As for driving north, how much of a big deal is it to get on a ferry? I was planning on driving south from the airport and around Tacoma when I arrive. But will have time on Thursday on the trip back.

I work for a small Systems Integrator from Wisconsin. We build industrial control panels for all sorts of different industries. One of our customers supplies boiler/gas burning equipment. This particular one has been installed in the paper plant, and I will be on site to make some modifications.

I mainly program PLCs (industrial computers) as well as the HMI's (human machine interfaces). But then the other half of my job is being on site, testing and starting up the physical equipment we are controlling.

So I actually travel all over the place. I end up where the panels get installed. Just this year I have been to New York, Connecticut, Texas, Switzerland, Ohio, and now Washington. Next up is San Diego.

You also need to drink some fresh hop beers. It's hop harvest season and something that, while not exclusive to the PNW, is uniquely PNW and almost every brewery does one.

Any breweries that are known for bottling fresh hop beers, so I may be able to take some back with me?

I know Fremont just came out with cans of a fresh hopped beer "Field to Ferment". Silver City is probably coming out with their Citra Wet Hop pale ale soon.

youll no likely be taking the bainbridge island ferry. there you have bainbridge Island Brewing. Stop in poulsbo ( you have to drive through it anyways) and there are a few MUST SEE breweries/ tap rooms.
Slippery Pig. They have the best atmosphere of any o the kitsap peninsula breweries.
Sound Brewing. Forever medal-ling in national Competition. Best Belgians around and not a bad beer on tap.
Volhol Brewing. Also a good place to stop while your near.
all three are 1-5 minutes away from one another.
Also Port Townsend has a very solid brewery itself.
The Public House is always a good place for lunch

Also, he should stop by Marina Market if he wants to buy beer while in Poulsbo. They have a great selection. Rainy Daze also just moved to Poulsbo, but I don't know if they have completed the moving process yet.

Catching the ferry is no big deal. Here's the state site: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/

In PT, Sirens is a neat bar that does good food. My friend Chris is a butcher, and he says they have the best burger in the state that he hasn't made himself. Also, check out The Pourhouse, nice spot with a good taplist, and the sell bottles to-go. Both Port Townsend Brewing and Propolis are in the boatyard at the south end of town and worth hitting up. Propolis has limited hours, so check their site.

As has been said many times, Propolis in PT. The Pour House is also a short walk away, and has a good tap list.

Fremont does. While you're here you should be able to find their Field to Ferment pales in both Centennial and Simcor versions. Cowiche Canyon Pale came out today.

Reubens is bottling their Amarillo FH and releasing it on Monday.

Most breweries here are just draft only for fresh hop beers. Drink fresh.

I'll triple-, or quadruple-down on the Propolis recommendation. Definitely interesting, and worth checking out.

Having done something very similar in a previous life, on Sunday I would pick up your car and go through Tacoma on the way to Port Townsend. Lots of places to stop and explore on the way. Lots. You'll be on site Monday thru ? and will have plenty of time to visit the local stuff. Or not. Depending on how the install is going.

If you booked your hotel near the airport for a Friday morning departure, on Thursday I would ferry back to the Seattle side, linger in Seattle or check into your hotel and light rail it back into Seattle. Night and day beer scene from what you just left but both are very Pac NW.

It's a small community. PTPC runs 12 hour shifts 5 to 5. 5:30 is a good time to make your presence felt at the Pourhouse.

Just remember you can finish your trip report on the plane. Don't squander your time out here in a hotel room typing stuff out. The internet is so sketchy the farther you get from Seattle

So true. PT makes electricity by having saquatches run on giant gerbil wheels. They use North Korea as their internet provider. Better be safe with sensitive data.

You don't know true this actually is. The turbine generators are from the initial installation back in 1929. They run on saturated steam not superheated steam. They should be in a museum. And they still make electricity.

Really? I'll admit to not knowing the difference between Saturated and superheated steam, would you explain a bit more for me? How would they be different from what is in a nuke or coal fired plant? It always amazes me when these little details pop up in our rambling beer conversations. It sometimes seems like we've got somebody who knows something about anything.
