I got a 4 pack today with a 4/8 canning date. It seems to have a really strange after taste (like something is wrong with the beer). I've only opened 1 can so far. I've only had this on tap, prior to today, and I don't remember this weird taste. Anyone else have this issue?
I just finished one tonight and it was as good as every. This was the second one of that batch both were clean without any aftertaste.. I've never had any off taste from fiddlehead.
i've got it in a VT DIPA line-up for a big blind tasting event tonight...going up against a dozen of its comrades. I'll report back if we notice anything off about it.
I definitely got a little Diacetyl/butter at the end. Didn't ruin the beer for me like old batches of Captain's Daughter though.
Drinking one right now with the same canning date, no strange aftertaste, straight up citrus bomb finish.
Definitely no issues...there were some notes that 2nd fiddle had some lactic acid noted by some on the panel, but saying it made the beer more crisp...but the 4/8 canning finished tied with sip of sunshine for BOS in our VT DIPA showdown (fwiw, heady finished 4th). The freshly grassy notes of the hops and crisp and clean body of the beer had the group enamored. Really wish we had some hill farmstead, but didn't.
I did a blind tasting a while back with SOS, HT, Captain's Daughter and a couple others. SOS and the Daughter favorites of the group. HT was towards the back. I'd love to get some 2nd Fiddle but that would require a special trip to Shelburne. Had Fiddlehead IPA on draft though this winter at Sugarbush and it was great!
Drinking one now and I have to agree that it has a really weird finish. To be fair, I never had Second Fiddle, but I just got two in a trade and this doesn't seem right for some reason. I had SoS right before and that blows this away easily...
I only get the weird taste on the finish. Smells great, initial flavor is great, I can't really describe the finish flavor. Bubble gum?
I didn't like the last batch of Second Fiddle that I had. I was going to trade a can but decided not to because I did not agree with the quality. I hope that future batches will taste better. It could also be my tastes so your mileage may vary.
I don't know when your Heady was canned, but I got some a couple of weeks ago that was super sweet - perhaps too sweet. I didn't say anything to anyone about it, but one of my co-workers came up to me a few days later and told me he sold the case he got that weekend because it was too sweet. It was like Five Alive juice. Bought some this weekend and it was perfect.
Good to know...would have been an early April canning. Already scheming another big IPA-off hopefully with some of the new Maine & Mass breweries when I get together with my girlfriend's family for 4th of July weekend (they have become an IPA loving family) so hoping Heady has a better showing Cheers!
Had some from the 3/20 batch that definitely had an odd note in the finish. Couldn't figure out if it was more woody or metallic to me, but either way it wasn't welcome. Had two cans and it was less pronounced in the second one I had, but still there.
