Anyone have a successful Fiddlehead Second Fiddle clone? Or does anyone have any idea what goes into this magnificent DIPA? I read somewhere that they use simcoe and mosaic hops, but other than that I am not finding anything. Grain ideas? Do they use Conan yeast like HT? Let's get this beer cloned...!
Haven't seen a clone attempt yet made on second fiddle...don't think he's using Conan as I'm pretty sure he doesn't have rights to that strain...but I've been know to be wrong about that strain before. Definitely a more malt forward than Heady, but less sweet. So would think some Munich and a touch of mid-range cara malts would be in order...just a guess though. Simcoe & Mosaic sounds about right, but feel there are some VT folks on here closer to Matty O that might help more
Not clear what that means, unless you are making a distinction between getting Conan directly from Vermont Pub vs. one of the various Conan-in-everything-but-name isolates that are available from a variety of yeast labs. I've got nothing else to add other than I had Second Fiddle over the weekend, and very much enjoyed the experience! Certainly had the New England IPA thing (juicy, hazy, some yeast character etc. that many of the best ones have).
Mike, I wish I could remember specifics of conversations better...but I'm not sure who banks VPB-1188 and I'm not sure whether Matt Cohen @ Fiddlehead has direct access to that strain (but on second though he was brewing in that era, & same city as Noonan)...but yeah was thinking that if he wanted to grow it up himself, a brewer could always circumvent the bank and either grow up it from a can of Heady or purchase one of the new labs/ranches.
