Apologies! I should've done this on the original thread, but I can't see a way of retrospectively adding a poll. So I've quoted all that has been said thus far below. Hopefully the poll will give a clear idea as to whether there's enough interest to make this worthwhile:

Yes, with the proviso that the beer was something local to you that the recipient didn't have easy access to.

It's a nice idea but the packaging and posting beer is such a faff that I don't really think it's worth it.

If it was a European thing I might be interested.
It's not impossible to send some Westy over, but then I would expect some Thomas Hardy back.

Yeah, I'd be happy to get involved with this. Postage etc is a faff, but at least you'll get beer in return!

If anyone can send me a black IPA I haven't rated I'll happily send them some of that over rated Monks brew called Westy.

You would have to factor in region to take into account availability
have some simple rules like not available in supermarkets (maybe just maybe off the shelf at Waitrose but not online)
    and maybe a price guideline
and it better get sorted quick

Okay, seems there's a few interested. Enough to make it work (hopefully!).

Agree with you @EmperorBevis about some guidelines. With that in mind, first draft:

    1. Send beer from local brewery(s), not available in supermarkets. If you are sending to someone who is in the same region, check their beer list. (With this in mind, make sure your beer list is relatively up-to-date, or run the risk of getting a beer you've already had).
    2. 3-4 bottles (assuming each bottle is around £2-£4)

    What do you think?

I would have thought the price range would be more £3-£6 with most indy bottle shops
so 2-3 bottles would make the p&p a little less & put a little more emphasis on quality over quantity

Fine with that! Shall we say 3 bottles?
I'd say that should be the stricter of the guidelines. i.e. it shouldn't be 1 x £15 bottle or 3 x £5 bottles. If you want to splash out on something, that's okay - but still aim for 3 bottles. Gives us more chance to be creative with the styles we can send. IMO.

    Guidelines 1.1

    2. 3 bottles. Guide price £3-£6 each.

Then we need to get moving,
    I don't know if @Zimbo or @jazzyjeff13
have seen this, if they haven't and want in

but we need an admin/secret santa selector
(who we are trusting to random select the names randomly & not pick out who they think will beer best for themselves
& also check the people buying aren't close by)
and we will need to message them our address.

So what I am proposing in true committee style
If anyone objects & doesn't want that responsibility

    SPEAK UP

because I'll draw names from hats soon for that

Could we have 2 name selectors, to ensure no one knows who's sending who? Just an idea.

    e.g.

    Selector #1 (person A)

    Person A will send to <1st draw from hat: B, C, D or E>
Person B will send to <2nd draw from hat: C, D or E>
Person C will send to <3rd draw from hat: B, D or E>

Selector #1 does not include their own name in the hat. If they don't pull Selector #2 from the hat during their draw, start again until they do!

    Selector #2 (person D)

    Person D will send to <1st draw from hat: A, B, C or E>
Person E will send to <2nd draw from hat: A, B or C>

In principle this is a great idea but it really needs to be pan-European to get enough critical mass.

Also I personally wouldn't get involved unless there was a minimum requirement for previous trades completed before you could participate. The RB EuroSanta equivalent required something like 100 ratings or 5 previous trades.

Pan-European would be great! And if that happened, maybe minimum requirements would have to be instilled.

But there is something I like about us Brits. And with it just being us, I'm happy to trust those involved. For 3 bottles of beer, is it worth alienating yourself?

...also, I've never traded on here before, so it would rule me out! :flushed:

I've traded once in four years so I would be out despite having one of the highest beer karma scores in UK
When I first agreed it was because I had
One amazing limited edition beer that any beer enthusiast would love and one bottle the p&p would only be a couple of quid
Okay I'm willing to send more but I think we need a central who has everyone's details and hold all accountable
Plus keep it simple and not scare people off

p.s. I now want to rig it to make sure you're sending to me, Bevis!
