I can't recall seeing this in previous year's FIS but there is quite alot of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. It dosen't come out with the pour though. Is this intended to be swirled at the end similar to a Hefewiezen? Or is it part of the bottle conditioning and not intended to be part of the experience?
    Thoughts please.

I noticed some sediment in some of mine as well (not sure if all bottles that I've had). Personally, I'm fine with sediment making its way into the glass, but with the exception of a hefeweizen I wouldn't encourage it via swirling (but again, just my preference).

Most craft beers are unfiltered and unpasteurized.

I noticed this, too. But I drank it all. And it was just great. One of my favorite Imperial stouts.

I have noticed this on previous years bottle that have sat for a few months. This years seem to have it in all the bottles. I pour about ten oz. in my glass then swirl around whats left to loosen the sediment, then pour the rest in the glass.. It give's it a fantastic head.

Founders does not filter any of its beers as far as I know.

Founder's Pale Ale also has sediment, so this must just be a thing with them. Usually, I believe sediment would indicate an old beer.

Are you sure it wasn't KBBS?

I've noticed the same thing as the OP in founder's porter before. With the cap still on a little swirl would not get the sediment loose. That's some sticky yeast I would say.

A beer does not need to be "old" to have sediment, it just needs to be bottle conditioned and/or unfiltered. As a beer sits sediment will drop out, making a previously cloudy beer a bit clearer.

I would second not doing a 'hefe swirl' and leave it behind as much as you can, though don't obsess over it. It won't hurt and you probably won't notice it if you drink it, but it can produce an astringent bitter off flavor, ranging from 'slight' to 'noticeable' depending on how much there is.

My statement was with those obvious exceptions in mind. In other words, if there's sediment when there shouldn't be, it's old.

I keep the sediment in the bottle and when done the beer, chug the sediment (unless it's DL :stuck_out_tongue:)

Thanks for all the input. I'll just keep pouring them as I have been, no Hefe-Swirl. Cheers!

I have a four pack with the same, bottled on 12/07/2014.. Kind of tan gelatinous mass after a real good swirl. I'm thinking it's yeast. I personally think it makes the brew taste creamier, so I do swirl it, and i just leave the mass in the bottom of my glass throughout the 2-3-4 of these I drink. I don't actually drink that tan jelly at the bottom though.... My 2cents.
