I've used whole hops for APAs and small additions before. It's all gone pretty smoothly, but I generally stick to hop pellets. Today, I couldn't help myself. I made an IIPA. I've got 7 pounds of whole hops to burn through, so why not? I used pellets for bittering, and 7 oz of leaf hops for aroma. 55 minutes into the boil, I started furiously adding RO water to help correct for hop absorption. I'm going to add 3 or 4 more oz of leaf for dry hopping. A few questions:

1.Do you know roughly how much wort dry leaves will soak up per oz/pound?
2.Do you wring the hops out? I did, and I'm not afraid of vegetable flavors
3.Do you use a bag to help rack around hops when dry hopping?

    Cheers!

I assume 0.0625 gallons of wort absorbed/trapped per ounce of hops. I've also seen estimates of 0.04 gallons per ounce.

    I don't.

I dry hop in a bag, in the keg.

I use Vikeman's assumptions in BrewCipher and they are very close for me, I sometimes get slightly less absorbtion but much closer to .0625 than .04.

    Ditto on the assumption.

I dryhop in the keg, in a hop bag. I normally carb it and drink it down hard early, and let it drain in the keg and remove it.

That's about a cup per oz. Thanks Vike.

    Mental note on absorptions:

1 cup per oz of dried hops
1 quart per pound of dried grain

I remember .12 gal/lb of grain, so about a pint.

Sorry ... at my age I don't remember ... assume ... or absorb anything.
