i use a small milk warming pan with an even smaller pot fixed to the top. so kinda a small double boiler works perfect.

I think I'm going to give it a try and wax about a dozen bottles at a time. I raised the question of it's effectiveness, but I figure it can't hurt. You'd figure wax around the cap would have to improve the airtight seal and would certainly provide a barrier in case the seal between the cap and bottle starts to degrade.

I drop my entire bottle into a coffee can of hot wax, let it cool and solidify, and then label the can with what beer is inside. I don't like to take chances with oxidation. Better safe than sorry is my motto!

Yesterday I did pick up some bottling wax at the homebrewing store down the street and today I wax my first couple dozen bottles. It was really easy. No problems at all!

I purchased two different colors of wax: gold and silver. I like to have choices. I used two empty Campbell's Chunky soup cans and filled them both with wax. I used a single electric burner that I set to medium and placed the cans directly on the burner. It took about 30 mins. before the wax was ready. I also used bamboo skewers to stir the wax:

I took the wax off the burner before placing the first bottle in the wax (in this case GI Madame Rose):

Obviously, I first placed the top of the bottle in the wax. Then I took the bottle out and tilted the top at a slight angle downward so the excess wax would drip back in the can while slowly rolling the bottle. Here's my first batch. They turned out great. I ended up waxing about 50 bottles today! Here's my very first batch:

They all turned out great. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Oops, forgot to mention that I double-dipped all the bottles!

+1 on glue stick and crayon waxing. Did this for some homebrews recently, much cheaper than buying bottle wax and way more customization.
