Do whatever you like. You bought the beer. Just because others on the forum "wouldn't", doesn't mean you "shouldn't". Give it a try. Start small. If it's crap, lesson learned.

This is correct vanilla extract is not sweet do some sort of simple syrup with vanilla would be the flavor your looking for.

Do it. It's just a bottle of beer, worst case scenario you wasted $2-3 on an old raspy and it tastes too vanillaey. Best case scenario you have an awesome glass of vanilla beer.

I was at my beer store yesterday and WTF... there are NO beers on the shelf with vanilla in them and I don't like fucking latte. I prefer women.

2010 was the first year of Coffee and they did it again this year. From the looks of it theyre going to do Coffee every year and another variant (Vanilla then Bramble and 2012 wheat whiskey) of randomness

Or how about he drinks his beer however the fuck he wants?

No disrespect? Maybe you should check the definitions of those words.

Okay, so let me get this straight. Coffee will be an annual release. And every year they're going to roll out something else in addition to it: vanilla last year, the bramble rye this year, and you're expecting a wheat whiskey next year.

That's kinda cool. I hope they rotate another vanilla in there at some point though.

Lemme take this opportunity to give massive props to my local distributor (Huntington Superstar Beverage) and Goose Island:
They just had an awesome rare Goose Island tasting featuring the Bramble Rye, King Henry, BCBS, and the Coffee BCBS (although there were only 10 bottles available, so you had win a raffle to purchase one (also had 2 bottles of the Rare BCBS for raffle/silent auction (too pricey for me)). They also had Big John (which I'd never heard of or had prior - totally awesome stuff BTW) and Night Crawler, both of which are "retired" apparently. This is in addition to their entire vintage and classic line. You got to sample everything, and have it professionally paired with cheeses provided by Goose Island, as well as there being platters of additional breads and cheeses provided by the distributor.
Purchases were limited on the rare bottles, but I got everything I wanted: tried all their vintage ales I'd never tried before, went home with a King Henry, a Bramble Rye, and a Big John, and came back to pick up my raffle-won Coffee BCBS as well as a couple of leftover 12oz bottles of BCBS.

Thank you, Huntington Superstar Beverage and Goose Island!

The best beer I've had containing vanilla was/is DFH Immort Ale.

Without commenting on whether or not to add vanilla yourself, camhack, if you like vanilla in beer you have to try Immort Ale.

    Yes sir!
Heres the reference for wheat whiskey

Also don't expect another vanilla. From what I've heard it was a huge PITA to clean their systems afterwards and they didn't think it to be worth the effort.

That being said after how hugely popular Vanilla has become they may rethink that

Trade for a growler of Willoughby B.C. "Peanut Butter Cup Porter" you won't be disappointed.

Also, if you put Vanilla or Bourbon or whatever in your beer, I'd probably suggest putting it in the glass first, then pouring the beer over it.

This didn't work for me with the Ten Fidy but I suspect that this is at least partially due to operator error. I probably didn't use enough vanilla and it got eaten alive/totally nullified by the beer. I'm trying to find something else that I have laying around that this might work with. I really don't want to befoul a Founder's Imperial Stout but I might have to. Personally I like the original poster's suggestion of an Old Rasputin but I don't have one handy. I wonder what my psychiatrist would think of all of this.

It takes several days for flavor to extract from a bean, so extract is your best option. It's not my thing to mess with a beer, but who am I to tell you what to do with your beer? Vanilla extract works great in Coke. I'm sure it will be fine but definitely use a tiny amount to start with.

In addition to the extra work that went into Vanilla, I've heard the higher ups want to stray away from traditional stout variations. They want something that sounds classy, hence Bramble Rye and Wheat Whiskey. I've also heard this is a major thorn in the side of those at GI who think that BOURBON County Stout should be aged in BOURBON barrels.

All I know is I want Bourbon County Brand Chocolate Stout, which I loved when I tried it at Sheffield's last year. I've been preaching this for a while, but it seems to be slipping away, only to be replaced by brews with fancier names. :slight_frown:

I've never had a decent beer with which I've thought "This would be better with vanilla/coffee/fruit/........." but I've had a lot of flavoured beers when I wonder "why did they bother?" or "why did they spoil a perfectly good beer?"
If you like vanilla, try ice cream.
