I have been thinking about waxing some bottles, good way to kill a Saturday. I was wondering what the general feeling is of trading self waxed bottles? I don't see it as being a deal breaker, but like any hobby/collectible some like it to be original packaging Cheers Eric
i've read that if not done properly waxing can actually do more harm than good in terms of aging. I wouldn't wax any "rare" bottles as some like to showcase their slayed whales. just my two cents, good luck.
What kind of harm might that be? I wax my bottles, but I'm getting them in a trade I don't want them waxed...for photographic reasons I prefer the "original packaging"
You are a puzzle, wrapped in an enigma Anyone who has received bottles from me knows that I wax them, and I wax them thick. And I've never heard anything about wax hurting beer - how exactly would this even be possible? Wax away!
If I wanted to buy a vintage car I'd want it to look exactly like it would have 50 years ago, not with flames and shit all over it because you thought it'd "look cool". Ps. I don't know anything about vintage cars. That was just my analogism.
Feel free to correct me...but I always wonder if wax really does anything, and by wax helping, what kind must play a role...I see three different kinds 1. bottling wax 2. Plastic (that looks like wax, and I doubt anyone is doing on there own) 3. Candle/bees wax (like on the new glarus) Wax seems to be mostly for show IMO, its not going to protect against large temperature swings, but maybe depending on what kind of wax, it may protect against minor fluctuation. But Caps protect against minor fluctuations, as well. I have never done a wax test but for the homebrewers I did do the oxi-cap test, and they work..3 years side by side and you could tell the difference.
