    Oh hallelujah another list...

    20 Best New Sours

Posting not so much for the list, but I think the article is decently written and might be helpful to someone looking to develop understanding of this group of beers. Gose isn't mentioned in the body of the article and I wish it was since it figures into the list.

I don't look at this as a list of "the best" despite the title (editorial change???). It doesn't seem written that way - more of a survey and just talking about some beers. Admit I have no level of expertise in this style, maybe that is why I don't mind the article. It tells me some things that are out there - some I recognize, most I don't - and talks a little about each one.

    YMMV...

Great list here. Would love to get my hands on some Westbrook gose!

Yes. This is a perfect example of an editor doing a fine piece on sours in which the publisher then tried to force clicks through the title. It works though...unfortunately.

The writer even says it somewhere in the article that this isn't a comprehensive list - he tried a bunch of beers, he liked the ones listed in no particular order. No - this is not a "best of" list by the author's intent.

    Cheers!

Great article, just like OP indicated. Reminded me of my first sour beer, although I can't say I've progressed significantly in the past couple years in terms of seeking out sours.

I want that all in my face.

I love the fact that he chose Supplication from RR. I feel like Consecration tends to get a bit more love, but Supplication is definitely my favorite of the "-ation" beers from RR.

Also, I can vouch that La Boheme is a fantastic beer. It's a Flanders Oud Bruin, but it's aged on cherries, like you would with lambic to create a kriek. I think the secret is still in effect, because I was able to score a bottle a couple weeks ago several hours after a local liquor store posted on FB that they had it, BA Old Rasputin and Uncle Jacob's.

    Some additional deep thoughts:
    • I'm a little disappointed they didn't mention Boulevard at the end of the article where he just lists a few other breweries to look out for with regards to sour beers. They don't do a ton of sours (neither does CCB or Uinta that I'm aware of), but Love Child is outstanding, and they had a Kansas City release this past late summer/fall that was just unbelievable: Foeder Projekt #1.
    • Coinicidentally, my first sour beer was also a Cantillon... AT Cantillon. Only time I've ever had a young, unblended lambic.
    • I wasn't quite sure about his use of the term "new" sours. Especially with the inclusion of the Boon Lambic, Rodenbach, Supplication, Ritterguts, and La Folie, and even Sour in the Rye. All great beers (well, I've not had the Boon or Ritterguts), but not ones I'd consider new.

I didn't think Boone's Marriage Parfait was "new". Also, "sour" is not a term I would use to describe Troublesome (maybe I'm thinking of the wrong beer). Sorry. I'll stop nit-picking now.

No Jolly Pumpkin or Against the Grain or DESTIHL?

Strong article. Like any listing it's missing some favorites. Where's Jolly Pumpkin?

I also really want some Westbrook Gose. If it tastes as described, I'd go through cases of it. A couple of their beers have been popping up in Ohio lately...so maybe by summer?!?

Come to think of it, I'd like to have seen one of Prairie's sour saisons on that list (like maybe Prairie Gold).

    O.K. Honestly done nit-picking now. I swear.

"It smelled of horse butt dabbed with vinegar and blue cheese." Ted Mosby voice: Kids, this is how you get to be a professional writer.

I could argue some not-included versus included beers, but that is one of the best beer articles I've read in several years. Props to the author and to the OP for sharing.
